I have decided to make a roof rack for my beast truck. So far I have $30 in metal and a sketchup drawing. The metal totals 40' each of 5/16 bar stock and 1.5 x 3/4 rectangular tube.  It will clamp to the side rails of the stock rack, removing the cross members of the stock rack.  So... | | rather then |=| ... Get the idea?

Any ideas? I want it useful for packing camping supplies/kayaks but also good for hauling around lengths of wood and metal up there.

Another mock-up. This time with two different ideas for the front and sides.

Edit. Have the sketchup files for anyone interested.

Looks like we lost some posts in here, too. :(

So, I think I finally have the design finalized. From my material totals it looks like I need 40 more feet of the 5/16 bar and 10 of the rectangular tubing.  That will leave me with extra, but that will be a good thing. I am sure to mess up something. Or I might need more cross members.

Here is a mock-up! The big open area between the lights is for transporting kayaks/canoes and such. I might build a bolt-on gate to fill that space for times when not transporting huge things.

Edit:
It seems I can't stop messing with it. And that I like 45* angles everywhere.

Woah, sweet. The one with all the angles looks awesome, but hard to make.
