Boba Fett Helmet

So I decided one day after having my friend over that a new Boba Fett helmet was in order. My old one is so cracked and warped and crappy that it just plain sucks. Being the stupid person that I am, I decided to read about what helmets were good and which ones weren't. What I gathered is that any helmet  created by a company and mass produced is a piece of crap...if you want a good one get it from a fan who made it themselves. Unfortunately...there are not all that many of those people and half the people that make them don't anymore. And here the story begins....

I figured what the heck! If they can make them so can I! My plan as of the moment is to make a replica of a good helmet out of clay, bake it hard, perfect it, and then make a mold out of it so I can cast my own. How far this project actually gets is certainly debatable at this point, but I do have some clay and am starting the shaping process. We shall see!

Any comments anyone has would be appreciated...positive or insulting for all I care. I just need some sort of feedback to help me out.  :-\  And pictures to come soonish! Assuming I can figure out how to post them and if anyone is interested.

Update - Here is a link to the gallery with a few pictures of the helmet. I know it still sucks and doesn't look like much.

Out of clay eh? Interesting...

I'm actually in the process of making a Boba Fett helmet out of cardboard at the moment (I'm using it for Halloween) so far it's working pretty good. It won't be near as strong of course as one made out of clay, but that wasn't really my objective. Of course if I did want to make it strong I could cover the inside with fiber glass resin.

I'm interested to see how yours turns out. I expect pictures as soon as possible.

We just got the wiring done for our kiln. It could bake your helmet all the way to stoneware (as apposed to the brittle biskware state) and your welcome to use it. Sounds like a cool plan. What comes after the clay phase? And have you read anything about the material (that I can't remember what is called) that people are making master-chief helmets out of? I will update this when I find out what its called again.

Sintra? (wiki)

Nick

Yes. That is the stuff. Thank you. I wanted to play with some of that ever since I read about it!

Cody

I have messed with that stuff quite a bit and it is pretty cool. That is what my Fett armor is made out of mostly.

Actually, a Working with Sintra writeup would be an excellent addition to Randomland, in my opinion. Did you take many pictures of the process?

Cody

Sadly not actually. My original armor that I made was done perhaps before even you had a camera so pictures are scarce if at all findable. The armor I have now I actually purchased off of eBay so the best I have of that is painting pictures. But I do agree that a "Working with Sintra" thingy would be cool to have... Should anyone fork out the money to buy a sheet I would be glad to make some sort of a page or at least contribute what knowledge I have of the stuff. I just can't afford to buy any nor do I have anything I need to make.

@Jacsveus

So, did you give up on this project? Even if you did, I'm sure that one poor soul would happen upon a post about this, if you wrote it. Call it "randomland.net/rec/fett-helmet" or something. Brad's making one too, so it could be a whole, sprawling section.

If you have Drupal anxieties, I can show you how to do stuff. We can even set you blagblog so. Man, this is the place to be! Please?

BUMP!!!    8)

Dude there are only like two topics in this sub-forum. It's not like anybody is going to miss seeing this one.

Should I make my own post to discuss my Boba Fett creations so as not to disrupt Cody's post if he ever decides to post again?

Nick

Naaa, like you said: two posts. It not like its going to get lost.

Brad

I'm thinking about writing an article about my costume creation process. I've got a whopping 2 pictures about it uploaded to Randomland so far! I should probably use a non-phone camera to take more pictures.

Continuing my hijacking of Cody's thread, my current progress is as follows:

Helmet: Construction completed. Still need to seal and paint.
Armor: Most pieces cut out and sanded (Just need back plate). Still need to mold them all to the correct shape. I borrowed a heat gun to do that.
Jetpack: Most of the body is constructed. Still need to create the missile that goes on the top.
Gauntlets: Nada
Other: Ordered coveralls from Amazon (hopefully they'll arrive in time). Bought rope to make the rope-belt thing, but need to color it somehow. Melissa is going to sew me a vest to attach the armor to.

I have no idea how I'm going to finish this in time.

Nick

I still offer any help that I might be. It would get me working on mine more too.

Brad

My goal is to get all construction done this weekend, leaving only painting and attaching to the vest to be done next week.

I'd also like to have everything done before next Friday so I can show it off at work even if we aren't doing anything at work for Halloween.

So if you want to come over this weekend or an evening this weekend or both just let me know.
