Brad

I thought I'd move my own Boba Fett related discussion to its own thread as Cody is posting again and It's rather rude of me to just hijack his thread.

Anyway, I completed the Jetpack last night!

And my helmet:

Now with the helmet construction completed, the jetpack construction finished and all of the armor parts cut out and sanded my remaining steps are:

Seal & Paint Helmet
Seal & Paint Jetpack
Heat and Mold Armor
Paint Armor
Attach Jetpack to back plate
Create Ammo Belt
Attach Armor to Vest & Coveralls

Melissa is sewing my cape and vest. I'm still waiting for coveralls, they were supposed to be here on friday :(
I brought all my armor pieces and my heat gun with me to work today so I can get some molding done during lunch today. I'm running outta time so I'm really scrambling to get all this stuff finished.

Cody

Very nice. Lightweight too I bet!

Of what I have seen, I can attest to it being pretty awesome. Inspiring, at the very least. However, I would probably never do a Fett. Or even anything cult-movie related. But yeah. Keep up the awesome; get it painted!

And sorry, I can't go take videos of your being strange on Halloween evening -- Eve and I will be indisposableed.

Brad

We don't really have any plans for Halloween anyway. We'll probably do something during the day and then just stay home and watch movies and answer the door for trick or treaters. Nick you can still come over and wander around outside to scare small children again if you want. I think I want to watch either Alien or Aliens as my "scary" movie. I haven't seen those in a long time.

Anyways, I put a layer of sealant on the helmet last night. It actually works pretty well, it seems to make the thing a bit stiffer and stronger too (also more water resistant). I didn't get to put the sealer on the jetpack though as I decided to slap some bondo/spackle over some of the rough spots on it (mostly the missile cone at the top). So I'll do that tonight.

I heated and molded all the plastic parts of the armor yesterday during lunch. I'm just waiting on my coveralls to get here so I can start attaching the armor and making sure everything fits. I'll probably have more (and better) pictures to upload tomorrow as I want to get some good pictures of my helmet's painting process.

Yeah, post it up. I wonder how well the paint will cover that clear-coat stuff?

And we have the first 3 Alien movies. You're welcome to borrow them.

Brad

I tested the clear coat + spray paint on a scrap piece of cardboard, it actually works really well. Much much better than attempting to paint directly onto the cardboard. If we had used clear coat last year when we made the lego man costumes it would have taken 1/4 of the spray paint, been done much quicker and looked a lot better.

Basically clear coat is awesome.

Also yes I would like to borrow Alien and Aliens. I was planning on renting them but If you'll me borrow them that'd be great! Thanks!

I wore the helmet to work today. Courtney took some pictures, hopefully they'll get uploaded at some point. I'd like to get all the pictures from this project together in one gallery.

Edit: Finally got some pictures uploaded. Check out the gallery here to view them.

Sad times for bounty hunters. Reduced to a desk job.

Brad

So I pretty much screwed up the dome of my helmet.

I decided to seal the inside of the helmet to protect and make it last longer. Unfortunately it seems that the cardboard triangles which make up the dome soaked up the sealant and shrank. This left indentations in the top of the dome visibly showing the triangle pieces which make the dome. No smooth surface anymore.

At some point I'll have to sand down the top of the dome, fill in the indentaions with putty, reseal and repaint the dome. I still have all the sealant and paint I need so It's just my having to waste time redoing what I've already done.

Nick

That sucks. But its fixable so it could have been worse. Still going to finish the rest of the suit?

Brad

I'd need to find some kind of motivation to finish my suit. Since I don't have a deadline anymore. I also don't have a designated day I can wear it and not look like a loser.

Maybe If I change things up a bit to make it fun again. Like actually make the gauntlets shoot out nerf darts, or make the jet pack shoot a rocket out of the top or something to make it interesting.

Anybody want to be Boba Fett for next halloween?

Nick

You should finish it for use then. Get some other people to join in on the theme. I'll be a rancor.
