Title: iPhone / iPod repairs
Post by: zourtney on May 15, 2010, 09:11 PM
I hijacked (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,124.msg2412.html#msg2412) Brad's old "hey I got an iPod (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,124.0.html)" thread a while ago and started talking about my cracked iPhone glass. I figured I should make a new place to talk about this stuff.

So, post up your Apple device woes here!

I'll start it off. As I mentioned above, Eve's old iPhone took a face plant on our kitchen floor and ended up with a cracked screen (http://randomland.net/node/1421). It is still fully functional, but it is dizzying to try and read the screen with all those cracks. She's not using it anymore, but it'd still be nice to fix, even if just to use as an oversized iPod.

Official Apple repair is out the window; they quoted us $199 to repair (which is strangely synonymous with "replace" in the Apple store). It cost that much new (under contract).

This (http://www.missionrepair.com/default.asp) place seem reputable. While they're not the (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-Screen-Digitizer-Adhesive/dp/B002A9PVAI) cheapest (http://www.idemigods.com/iPhone_3G_Front_Panel_Screen_Digitizer_with_Glass_p/iphn_3g_dgtzr.htm), it might be a good way to go. I think all I need is the glass and digitizer (http://www.missionrepair.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=822-4033&Click=15003). However, this kit (http://www.missionrepair.com/iPhone_3G_Complete_Digitizer_Assembly_Front_Glass_p/822-4048.htm) includes a few more parts and sounds easier to do at home. Listen to the last few minutes of the video -- I know, it's marketing, but I'm not very confident (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,153.msg2597.html#msg2597) in my hardware repair skills at the moment.

But, at the cost of that, plus the cost of tools I'll need, I might as well just have them do it (http://www.missionrepair.com/Mission_Repair_3G_iPhone_Digitizer_Screen_Repair_p/222-4021.htm) for me. It'd sure be nice to have the feeling of accomplishment of fixing it myself, but when I repair electronics, it never comes out quite right  :P

Edit: here's a good video of how to do it with the cheap kit (just glass and digitizer). It looks like a pain. :-\

Looks intensive. But mostly doable and kinda fun to try. Well, fun if it weren't for the cost.

I need to take mine apart and fix the headphone jack (again.)

I find it amusing how easily the glass pulls away from the body. That site sells headphone Jack replacements (and I'm sure lots of other places must as well).

I bought a new headphone jack. And with the help of a little pocket multitool opened the case, desoldered the old jack and put in the new one. It was easier then I was expecting. After getting the jack loose I was able to maneuver it around the pcb board and pull it out. Installation is obviously the reverse of removal :) Now I can hopefully use all my headphones without suffering from a bad right channel.

Cool, cool. That makes you Randomland's resident i-whatever expert. I still ought to fix Eve's old phone. Though I don't what I'd do with it. Know anyone with a heat gun? It's needed for ungluing some bracket...video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsFTlVTSeIA&feature=related) (or about 1000 other places).

Brad had one for a while. I think he was borrowing it though. But I think my grandma owns one she would like lend out. And there is always harbor freight. :)

Let us know how the phony repairs go. And take pictures :)

If I do it, I might need some moral support! :)

Any time. I'll even operate a camera while you do it!

Where did you get your iPod headphone jack? I need to order that glass and fix that thing soon, or else I'll forget about it forever. And I want to try silly things on it. Like jailbreaking and Andriod :)

Haha, that will be cool. I got it off the eaby from some company in California. They shipped it fast enough, but only placed it in a envelop. Not that it was a fragile part or anything that needed special packing. I think it cost me around five dollars all told. I could have gotten it cheaper.... but I still might be waiting on the shipping. (Dang those slow Hong Kong customs.)

Hmm ok. I've seen the part (glass+digitizer) range from about $15 to $50. Apparently some kits don't give you the adhesive which holds the glass to its frame...which is a problem. I'll just have to take a gamble and order from somewhere.

Do you have face sucking tools and itty bitty screw drivers? Or should I pick up a set of my own? (the screw drivers might be a nice thing to have around)

I have an itty-bitty screw driver... but its half broken. I don't have the face sucker as all the work on mine was on stuff on the back of it. So all I have needed to do is take the rear cover off. I also don't have the tools for opening the case. I have used various multi-tools to get it open. But mine had a crushed corner and a blanket of scratches on it when I got it. So I haven't worried about the metal tools making more scratches. Most of the kits online come with the tools to open it though. Just check and make sure whatever one your looking at does as well. It will make it all easier.

Yep, I'll do that then. It'll be good to gave the screwdrivers, if nothing else.

I finally ordered my replacement screen.

Cool. You will definitely have to let us know how it goes. I need to open mine (yet again) and figure out what headphone connection is lose this time.

We should have a "party." I don't suspect it'll arrive this weekend. But Maybe we could next weekend? Unless you get to yours before that. Breaking stuff (and trying to fix stuff) is always better with friends around.

Anyone have a heat gun?

My grandparents do! I haven't ordered anything. But I would like to get the tools that make opening iPods easier.

My parts unexpectedly came yesterday (I figured it'd take a few days longer). I need to scrounge around and find out what tools I need. I think my glass kit came with El Cheapo "spudger (http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/Spudger/IF145-002)s."

I hadn't expected it, but my glass kit came with everything (including a iWhatever face sized suction cup, screwdrivers, and plastic scraping tools). You're more than welcome to use any of them, if they'd help.

Now, where (http://www.harborfreight.com/1500-watt-dual-temperature-heat-gun-572-1112-96289.html) to acquire a heat gun...

$10 is not bad for a heat gun. Would a hair dryer work :)
Title: Re: iPhone / iPod repairs
Post by: zourtney on Jul 27, 2010, 12:38 PM
Supposedly it works. It just takes a long time to heat it up. But if I can find a heat gun for $10-$20, it might be useful to have around.

Supposedly one will get the stress marks out of the plastic on my bike. I always wanted to try it and see. For $10 I might buy one. Or I can give you $5 and you can let me borrow it :)

Hmmm, so a quick trip to Ace says  $65. Which is more like what I was expecting. Maybe I'll venture to Harvor Freight this weekend, I get a chance. Though I'm guessing it'll be slightly disappoiting, like many Harbor Freight tools. Bu Tia been a while since I stopped by...

The phone is fixed! My older brother Kyle actually did the work. His phone crapped out and he needed something quick. So he fixed it up in my living room. We actually forgot to turn it off..! But it is back together and working fine (at least, as of last night).

I'll try to post some pictures "tomorrow."

That's pretty cool. How hard was it to get everything apart and back together?

Oh, and can I borrow your ipod opening tools?
Title: Re: iPhone / iPod repairs
Post by: zourtney on Aug 05, 2010, 11:49 AM
Pretty easy. There is one connector that is a pain to get back in to place. We had to take a meal break, otherwise something might've gotten broken out of frustration. But the rest is easy cheese. You may certainly borrow the tools! Just come on over, or I can drop them by next time I'm in town.

You're replacing the headphone jack?
Title: Re: iPhone / iPod repairs
Post by: Nick on Aug 05, 2010, 12:11 PM
I already replaced the jack. I need to open it to fix a loose connection that must not have gotten soldered all the way. Or one of the headphone contact pins might be bent back a little. Its WAY to easy to mess up the jack on the 1st gen ones.

Eve and I will be out and about tomorrow, but I can drop off the little bag o' tools, if you want. There's nothing fancy in it, but they were helpful to have and they did get used.

It'd probably be late morningish, if you want me to drop them by. Just let me know.
