What happened? We need to get some discussions flowing on here.
Tell me about it! I would totally be all like a posting master by now if anyone would post back!!
Yeah....
I post back... :-\
Yeah, but yous about it.
Knock, knock....
Who is there?
Yo, yo, where my freaks at?
Or something like that. The forum is dying -- don't let it DIE!
Hey I post... sometimes.
I think the forum is about alive as it's gonna get with only 3 members who visit it regurarly. We need to get more people here, or at least Steve and Cody. Man, I haven't talked to Steve in a year probably...
In the ideal situation we'd have random people on the internet her to bother us, but unfortunately only spam bots seem to care about us.
We fortunately seem to be able to keep the spam bots out. Though random people seem to sign up and never post (though the confirmation email was broken for a while so that might have hindered some... it should be fixed now)
I try to drag Cody on here when I see him. It sometimes works for a day or two, then he he forgets about us. I even pm'ed him and he didn't even notice :(
I pm'ed that pu'nk several times :) No response at all. He really should get on going with some write ups of some sort. Or just make some snarky comments about the jedi or something. What was his thing? LWOL or the like? He could be starting a secret society right from the comfort of his own internets. But now I guess its not a secret.
Yeah, I don't know. But I do know that when I showed him he had a message, it was hard to see because the "(1)" was wrapped to a second line on the "My Messages" button. We might need to make that 5px wider, or something?
That would be cool. I never liked its PM thing being way up there. It needs to be larger and lower. At least that's what I say for now. Maybe just larger and we can move the green wispys around.
The green wispies are my favorite part of the entire forum.
I am glad they bring you pleasure. I don't think I could remake them if I tried. They were a nice little accident.
My other favorite part is this topic: 1111111111111111111111 by bartkarmen (http://randomland.net/sites/all/modules/smfforum/index.php/topic,40.0.html). I am positive that the only reason I have not deleted that is that post is because of the 2nd, "tell me more" post. It makes me chuckle every time.
Its also out first post by someone we don't know! I wonder if he gets topic reply emails for that :) Also, it has more views then any other topic the this section. Strange.
What happened? The forum died?
:(
I should make a page about my bike thingy...It hasn't fallen over yet, by the way..!
Sorry about that.I have been away from the computer for a while. People were sick and I was keeping them company, now I am sick too it might seem. Perhaps I will pull out of it quickly.
Keep 'er standing! I think the only way that will fall over is if you push it. Especially with bikes on it. How is the tippyness from side to side?
It's actually quite stable. I am very satisfied. I was worried that it might be unstable with only one bike on it. But when we tested it at your house, it was perfectly fine.
I like it.
Dude, man! Where's my peeps?
Ummm... Peep?
Peep 'n Pop
Plahtermobile! It's so the deads around here!
I should work on a writeup for my "bike tree." But alas, I suck. I should fix up the Rhino drawing so it is accurate to what we made. But alas, I suck.
I don't even know that I am using the word "alas" properly. But alas, I suck.
So do I. Have many ideas and so little direction. I am either too untalented or technically incompetent to do the things I think of. Suckith doth I.
The most discussion seems to come from projects people are working on. More projects -> more discussion.
Just make a topic about a project you want to work on. Then we can continually discuss it and never get anything done. Yay!
Hey, that's not entirely true...We talked about my bike stand project and made it! Of course, it was mostly me talking and drawing ugly pictures...
The forum is so dead today
That's because my computer got pleasantly little use today.
Tip: don't head bang with headphones on; they fall off.
t3hF0ru/\/\$!!!1 Wow, that's so obnoxious it's fun! I suppose that's why people do it. That and the whole "security through obscurity" farce.
Um. My power just flickered... big time. But the computer stayed on.
I have no idea what your talking about up there :)
Man its windy though. I better backup the randomnets in case the power dies.
Good thinkings. At least do a database dump. Then copy it the world 'round!...or throw it on your desktop's desktop.
And yeah, apparently it is windy. I should look outside more often. Though it has been dark for hours now.
Man, I got me a desktop in my desktop, so I can compute while I'm computing. Dawg.
hehehe :) yeah
Well it looks like the power did go out. And drupal took a little poopal in the database. All should be fixed now.
Man, the forum is not the place to be today...It's so quiet in here.
I've been busy helping get things ready for card games tomorrow (and I have a working copy of GT4 now. It has more annoying additions then good ones)
Sad. Like what?
Most races you don't start from a dead stop. You start the race moving in a single file line at about 30mph. So any low-end advantage that you have is lost and everyone is compleatly in the way, making very hard to pass during the first lap. And the tracks suck more, at least from what I have played. But it does look a little nicer and the controls are just a tiny bit better. I like the old way of starting the races so much better that I might not play 4 much. Though I was excited for it at first because you can race in a prius if you wanted :)
A Prius? Yuck. I mean, they aren't THAT slow, but it's no race car. One thing I remember about the old GT games is that it seemed Japanese biased. I agree they have mighty fine automotive engineering, but they threw in odd ball Japanese cars (like the Prius, which I now remember being in gt2) but left out odd ball cars from the rest of the world. Perhaps that is just a misconception, though.
They do seem a little Japanese biased. The Nissan Skyline and NSX seem to blow the pants off higher powered and more costly cars. But maybe thats power to weight.
Also I found in GT4 that you can buy a spoiler for the back of your car. They had things for adding downforce in GT2, but that was part of an aerodynamic package. These are just metal wings bolted to the trunk :)
You get used to some of the weird things in the game dynamics (like the rolling start). Overall I think its a harder game. You cant go as far on your starting car without dumping loads of cash in. But then I started with an MR2 so that could be my problem (an '86 at that.)
My favorite part of the game is the most useless. Its all the rather old and classicy cars you can buy used from the 80's. Like an '84 RX-7 or 300z :).
Nice, nice. I never really got a chance to try those games. This totally belongs under our "games" board.
In other news, there's snow everywhere where we are (Sunriver).
Cool. Make a snowman. And take pictures! (this thread seems to be turning into a general chatting channel :) But it keeps things alive.)
Yep, maybe we should rename it "NOP" :) Ah, the tomgeekery...
I took pictures, but nowhere near enough. I did walk in the snow a little though...barefoot even!
That would be great name for the time kill'n chatter'en lounge. And then we could get lizards :) I like the irony of having the general chat thread being called "Mans! The Forums Is the Dead!" So long live the forums.
True, that is kind of ironic. I hadn't really thought about it like that! I confused abou the lizard thing, though we both do have repitilian pets. Mine finally shed a little.
'Lounge lizards,' sorry. I was being a little abstract.
Does your little green friend look any bigger? And I guess he is really more of a tan.
Yeah, he is is definitely bigger. Not really longer, but much fatter. He's developed quite an appetite, as of late. We might have been underfeeding him a little. The pet-store people said he'll eat about one cricket per day. He has been eating more like 3 or 4. I wonder if he just likes the thrill of the hunt, though. Maybe we're overfeeding him now?
You would think he would stop eating when he is no longer hungry. Or is he one of those critters that just don't know when to stop?
What kinda lizard is he?
Was this pet store guy the owner of a small pet store or an employee of petco, petsmart etc? Some of those guys are really knowledgeable and some of them just make stuff up to seem knowledgeable.
Well, we were told he would only eat when he is hungry. This might be true; it's kind of hard to tell if he's eating because he is hungry or not. (Though I haven't actually tried a direct inquiry...)
They also told us he wouldn't bother trying to eat food larger than (approx) the size of his head. But I've seen him chomp at some BIG crickets. Maybe he just eats them because they're annoying :) Either way, he's growing and seems fairly happy...though I am no lizard-psych.
As for what kind he is, I'm pretty sure he is a Tremper Albino Mack Snow Leopard Gecko...! Quite a name, eh? That's from viewing pictures on the internet, like here (http://www.leopardgeckowiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mack_Snow). Leopard Geckos seem like the common thing to have. I never knew how many different colorings they came in until I looked it up on Saturday. He looks a lot like this (http://reptiles4you.com/gecko%20pics/Jungle%20Mack%20Snow%20Bell%20Albino%20Leopard%20Gecko.jpg) one.
Yup, that's what I remember him looking like. He's cool, though I didn't realize he ran MacOS. That's even cooler! I always figured you would go for an open source lizard, but Snow Leopard is nice in its own way. ;D
Hehehe :D I know, isn't it sad that Apple's marketing has won over my brain's primary reference "snow leopard?" Instead of thinking of some large feline (inherently awesome), I think computer software (inherently boring).
Sad, but so very true.
Oh, did I mention carnivorous? Large! lurking! carnivorous! fluffy [looking]! And they pounce!
Nope, instead I think computer operating system. Boooooooring.
NOP
:P
Man, where did everybody go? It's boring in here today...
I know. I am here. But have sadly little to say. It kinda seems to be a headache day, and those hamper my creative output. Maybe I should go try and fix something.
Was it the failed REI trip? That could cause headaches in the less resilient.
No, its a lethargic, head hurting, feeling drained day. It might be the weather. It might be all the nonsense dreams I have been having recently. But then it might just be the burritos. Just one of those days.
Definitely one of "those days." I can't even get comfortable sitting in a chair....or even in my skin.
Must be the weather. The inner nomad is telling us to go south or perhaps a primal urge to get busy preparing for winter.
The weather turned cold. We need snow...and I probably need new tires :(
Just do burnouts! Its fun and exciting! Though much easier in the snow. But those are more chill-outs then burnouts.
Sometimes I like the idea of having a full set of spare tires mounted on rims and ready to go. Be it snow tires, dirt tires, bald tires, sticky tires -- whatever the case, it just sounds nice. You could change your whole car's driving personality in about 10 minutes with nothing more than a jack and a socket wrench!
Maybe get some cheap junkyard wheels and make yourself a racing set :) Or just a bald set for playing with. Man, we need to get some rally cars...

Man, we need to get some rally cars...
Heck yes.
Who killed the forums?
If by "killed the forums" you mean that I haven't posted lately, then...uh, I guess I did? I sometimes wonder if I'm the forum's "keep alive."
Its just us. And sometimes brad. Someday someone might stumble in, who knows. We need more talk about tricking out tempos and adding NOS to civics :)
I was totally going to respond to this yesterday, but suddenly! my internet connection was severed! So, instead of a reflective, semirepentant post about riceboy bashing of yore, you just get this lame post instead. Ho hum.
INTERNEEEEEEEEET! we meet for the last time!!!!1111
Man, this forum is dead. Not super dead; just kind of dead.
Two (sometimes three) people can only do so much. I will detail the fixing of my cool-ant system (coolant) for all the world to see. That might attract a chevy lover or two. And the blazer buttons need up here :).
Can you define "Blazer Buttons" (better than this (http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS243&=&q=blazer+buttons&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g10))? :)
The electrical stuff I added to the blazer for the second battery. :)
I thought so, but thought those were mostly switches. That may or may not be relevant.
Just shooting for alliteration. Blazer switches just doesn't sound as good.
True.
Mannnnns it's dead in here.
Clean'n my boots. They were smell'n uh funny.
Man, it's dead in here! I suppose it's a combination of me not posting and everyone (including myself) is way too busy to be posting nonsense on Randomland. Oh well! I have taken 4gb of pictures this past week...I'm going to run myself out of hard drive space very soon, I'm thinking.
Anyway, Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Hope you got a bigger hard drive to help you cope with your new camera! You should make a nice little review of the snappy little machine and let the world know what you think of it.
As you said, yes I have been rather busy. But that will be partially over for a while. Though I do see electrical wire and insulation in my future. As well as dusty, yucky sheetrock.
Man, we need some action around here...It's getting dead, again :(
Just get some zombies a-walking. Then it will be undead around here!
That'd be so...um, creepy. So! What are you doing on New Years? I am lame and therefore have no plans. We should do something, even if it is just us sitting around saying "let's do something." :)
You can come over to my grandmas if you like. Or we can get together and play games on our own for a while. I personally will be going over to my grandmas for at least a while. They tend to go to bed earlier though so at 8 or 9 I would head out and join you all (unless you want to join me there. There will be brownies! And games! They all like phase 10 and Apples to apples.) So Brad, Courtney, Cody you are your respective others are invited.
Man, this forum is so dead... :(
Man, where did all my peeps go?
Peep. Peep, peep. PEEP!! YOOP?>!
Dude, where did everyone go? We should do stuff this weekend. Swamp diving, perhaps?
Clutch replacing perhaps. Out pickup got a little stuck last weekend and Richard killed the clutch trying to get out of the snow. So for saturday at least I will be helping with that. Your free to come over and help. Then there will be three of us in a small space rather then two! (its in the barn. The cats love having us down there with them)
Wow, that's a bummer. Didn't you just replace the transmission in that thing? It's probably been longer than I think though... Yeah, I could always take pictures, attempt to help, attack farm-life with angle-grinders, etc.
Its been longer then it seems. But I think it may be the same clutch from before the transition went out. I am not sure.
Come on over if you want! It would be nice to have more help. Should be nice and miserable outside. :)
I, um, like miserable?
No, wait.
Misery loves company?
Something like that.
Yeah, I could probably spare some time and head on over. I don't really have much else to do, actually.
Give me a call or just come on over!
Wow, you went to bed even later than I did...
Maybe I'll try dragging Cody along. I'm sure that he's not up to much today either.
Yay. The truck is ALL taken apart and the engine is partially lose and raised. Now I get t ogo to the junk yard and fine some replacement bolts and a hood opening cable.
Bam. Now the forums is less dead (at least .02% alive anyway)
Wow. Messy. And yeah, flywheel bolts are fun to take off.
Man, I expected the forum to be brimming with posts this week, but it actually seems quite dead. We should go swamp diving some time soon.
Just say when! Our truck should be fixed by tomorrow if you want to leap gracefully into a swamp.
Man, the forums is so dead. Did you finish your truck?
Yeah. We put the last of the pieces on last night and filled up the radiator. Then we took it for a test drive, overheated a little, added more water in the winco parking lot and were good to go. The power steering fluid was low for some reason too.... not sure how it got out other then because we had the engine tipped to far back for a while. But now it runs and drives again. And I have more knowledge id the S-10's insides... and more disdain for chevy engineers. (I mean, come on! Who designs a truck that you have to lift the body to get the oil pan off!)
Heh...yeah, I bet. I could be mistaken, but it seems that General Motors very unique engineering1 approach to most everything.
1 The Pontiac Aztec (http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/autos/0708/gallery.questionable_cars/4.html) proves that uniqueness is not limited to the mechanical engineering department, but has spilled into the design department as well.
That's American design for you. But we seem to like the abuse. :)
Eve is trying to get us a kitty again. She might actually get one this time though. And I might not say no. Nick, do you "have a fresh batch in the oven," so to speak?
I hope there are none in the oven. There is one that Richard thinks might have taken up baking, but I think shes just fat. We do have three medium sized kittens though. None of them are box trained (they go in the hay over with the cow and llama) and would probably be more work then it would be worth to box train them. I will let you know though.
Haha, ok then.
Oh noes! Who killed Tasha?? ???
Um, just kidding.
???
I'd explain it, but it's more fun if zourtney just seems like he is crazy.
What did she ever do to you, huh? Scrapbooking was her life. I just can't believe she's gone... >:(
I'm so, so sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do to help you though this time of grieving, don't hesitate to ask. Bye the way, who is Tasha?
Some spammer that registered. Brad deleted the account yesterday. I was just joking; it's more fun that way.
Oh. I figured it was something from a song you were listening to :) It was still entertaining.
Man, no posts on Randomland at all today? I'm really lazy today...
Dude, just... dude.
Randomland seems slow today.... in speed and in activity. I should soon have more things to post write ups on though. I guess I could even make a few blog entries about things. Not that many people would care... but it would be content!
The rabbit chewed through the power-cord of my laptop today when I went outside to let the dogs use the bathroom. It took her less than 5 minutes to chew completely through.
$65.99 for a new power adapter and cord. Yippy.
Dang, that sucks. For that kind of money I would be tempted to make a fix for it. Just cut out the bad part and either solder and wrap the wires and then heat-shrink over them with stuff made for electrical. Or stick a $2 3-wire molex plug inline where it got bit. Those are used for higher amp batteries then your laptops. Best bet would be the soldering and heavy duty heat shrink insulators I would think. Should be safe enough. Still got that heat gun borrowed? :)
Our house rabbit, back when we had one would chew on things as well. More then once it electrocuted itself trying to eat though the TV power cable. Our house was littered with extention cords and power cords with electrical tape wrapped somewhere around their middles. Those are all gone now though. A boring old wrap with electrical tape seems to work for a good long time (as seems to get harder to remove with age)
Oh, was it though the AC part or the DC part? You might be able to find the AC cable by itself for reasonably priced.
And it seems that wallmart has them for $35... strange.
It was through the DC part. It also wasn't just one hole straight through. It was one cut through all the wires and several cuts all around the thing about half-through it. And for some reason this thing has a bunch of smaller insulated wires inside of it. The computer also detects when it can't identify the type of power supply and gives you and error message. Why? I dunno.
Well that double sucks. Silly rabbit, um.. electricity is for kids? You will have to start covering all your electrical cords with Kevlar or something :)
Maybe you can concoct some sort of pepper-based liquid to coat the wires in! Then the rabbit will stay away because it doesn't like the spice!
...And every time you unwrap your powercord and unintentionally touch your eye, it'll water for 20 minutes. Ok, bad idea.
Oh! the disappointment. Nothing new on Randomland this morning :(
You can make it new! Just reach deep down inside to find your own, special flavor. And spill it forth onto the pages for all to enjoy!
This has been self-helps feel good corner.
In other news: I made an LED blink.
sweet! Show us how :) That totally deserves a post in one of those oft-ignored sections of this forum.
Dude, this forum is so dead this morning. Why, oh why?
Busy, so busy. Mud will not fling itself you know.
I almost have a kitty..!
Cool. Did they change the rules at your appt? Where are you getting it? Pictures?
Weeelllll, yeah. All you really need is a doctor's approval. So, since Eve's been going to the doctor about 3-4 times a month recently, she 'n Doc are buds. He signed it without hesitation (so the story goes).
So, we are calling her, Miko. I think Eve might be spelling it Meeko. Something in my brief foreign language education prefers the former spelling. I've posted pictures to the imagestream and tagged them 'miko.'
Here's a few teaser shots

Here is the gallery link. It doesn't parse properly at the brackets, so just copy and paste it...I'll add that to the Gallery's list of things to fix.

Pretty kitty. Is she box trained?
Yes, she is box trained. Which is definitely nice! We let her roam around the house last night, but we haven't found any "suprises" yet. And no claw / bite marks on anything yet, either. So far, good kitty.
Good. I am sure you will find that she will be a pleasant and rewarding part of your life. For extra fun get a laser pointer :)
:) yes indeed. We will have to pick up one of those some time.
So quiet in here..... do hear crickets?
I see cricket in my bathtub. Fortunately, they're the quiet kind.
I didn't even know there was a quiet kind of cricket.
Me neither. But the kind we get for gecko food never make any noise...so there must be a quiet kind, right?
What is the recommended way to make a blog post with an embedded image?
use courtneys rl-img thing. Its [rlimg nodeID]
Yeah, that's what I've been using, exclusively. The node's body text will show up as the image's title text. The stupid "caption goes here" will be fixed when I get that dang padding fixed.
Padding fixed. Either I am stupid (likely) or Drupal is stupid (less likely, though oh-so-Linux in nature).
In other news, today is my last day at work. But it seems like any other day...how strange.
Congrats on your new job. You never did say who it was with or what task you will be doing. And it looks like they have an opening at alliance all of the sudden.....
RLimg works or so well now? You should make a post on the forums someplace giving instructions on how to use it and all of its shiny and wonderful features.
There's another parameter you can send to it, I think, but I forgot what it was. I'll write something up when I fix up that caption text and stuff.
Until then, the basics is this:
[rlimg nodeID]
If you want to float it, first make sure that your text input format is "Full HTML." Disable the rich-text input and do something like:
<div style="float: left">
[rlimg nodeID]
</div>

Man, this forum is so dead today. What this dilly.
Peoples gots to work mans. And the site was down for half the day... I blame that on the cheap DNS service...
Yeah, now I don't get my free, full-time Randomland tech support. Drat.
I just bought 6 hamburger patties at $109.50 a piece. Lucky for me, they were having a sale and I got 4 brand new tires, mounted and balanced throw in for FREE!
I can't decide if that's a good deal or not...
The tires were needed. The beef was a bonus. That's the way it actually went down, but it's no fun to say it that way.
I know, I know. Free beef. Probably only in the north west do people understand that sometimes you get meat with your tires :) I am still sore that they wouldn't even give me a couple of jerky sticks when I had to get my tire replaced. All you got was 6 hamburger patties for spending more then $400? That less then 10%, not even a good tip. Schwabs just keeps letting me down. But hey, I guess it is still free.
Yeah, getting good customer service may be more "hit and miss" than it used to be. I went to the one in Sublimity (same one you did a while ago). The guy was quite helpful. He jogged a little and even asked me how they could help before I made it inside. The original quote he printed up was for a slightly different tire than what I used to have. After realizing that, he found me and asked which type I wanted. (I dropped the sport tires in favor of the taller, smooth-ride 80k mi tires, by the way). And he gladly checked my back brakes after I poked my head into their shop area and asked. He even reported back to me how paper-thin the back ones were before they finished up...without pushing a sale on me!
I got much better service than the last time I bought tires at that same store (4 years ago, or so). One of the other guys working there yesterday seemed less courteous. His brash, joking demeanor just didn't jive with the kind of customer service I would appreciate. So yeah, even at the same store on the same day, you have no guarantees. I think I was lucky and got a veteran worker who actually believed in quality customer service.
Economy tires! I guess it makes sense with all that driving in your future. I need to go get mine looked at. One keeps losing air.
One of Eve's was doing that. I had them look at it, they said it was fine, and it's been fine ever since.
Odd.
Odd indeed.
It's deader than a doornail in here, today.
Cody should have put his battery question on here. Then it would have been a little livelier. We are going to install a relay to isolate his battery (I think anyway.)
How was your weekend?
Cool. When were you planning on doing this?
My weekend was good. Nice and long. Pretty uneventful, but good. I did end up changing our image module a bunch, though. So that was progress, of sorts.
I like the new image stuff. Looks useful.
Randomland loads slow when your not on the same local network :) I never realized how bad it was...
I am not sure when Cody wants to work on things. Soon I think.
How the new jobzors?
It should be good. But I'm still new and confused.
And now it's raining! :( But it was to be expected. It's not summer quite yet.
Rain is why garages were made. I hope things go well at your new place of employment. It all sounded interesting.
Rain is nice. And we got the yard mowed before it started :) But now I can't test my tent.
Hey, it wasn't pouringly horrible outside today. And I saw a yellow plane circling.
It was kinda nice. What was the plane doing?
My windows expires in 4 days :( I have to do a clean install to "upgrade" to the release version of 7. No fun
I just updated the forum so we are running the newest version ever of the 1.XX line.
Cool, I tried doing that remotely once but it was giving me grief.
I did it manually. I think the SMF -> drupal bridge messed up the automatic one. But I'm not sure on that. I am still waiting for SMF 2. Seems like it has been beta for a year or more. Same with drupal 7.... will we ever see them...
Now you can add your BBcode blink thing!
Yeah! Bb blink is awesome!
Knock knock?
Who is THERE!!!!!!1
And your vb blink is not compatible with smf 1.1.11 :(
Nope. It's a 2.x thing. Wave of the futur, maaaaan
2.x is not out of beta yet!
I should set it up on the test site and see how it does.
Test site is good. And I should probably use that instead of the real, live Randomland while I'm developing my rlimg module. Because often times I'll forget a semi-colon in a PHP script and suddenly the entirety of the Drupal installation is brought to its knees. Then displaying a completely blank page for any Randomland URL.
Pretty sweet, I know.
Haha.. Nice :) I have done that once or twice when playing with the theme....
I'm so close to 1000 posts! :)
Wow. I am so far behind.
Nah, you're keepin up nicely. I just got a head start, somehow. :)
Man, is it dead in here?
Zzzzzzzzz
Just a slow week I think. I haven't done anything note worthy and brad never made any posts about his proposed camping trip. I did add that to the calendar though. We should all go this weekend. Or at the least go biking/hiking someplace.
Yeah, camping sounds nice, but not this weekend. It seems like I have something going on, though nothing noteworthy comes to mind...Still, something outside sounds nice. Somehing oter than replacing my brakes...which is probably what I need to do tomorrow :-/ Not that I have experience in that.
Biking perhaps? Your going to give out calendar a bad success rate if we don't do something!
I could just take it off the calendar :)
NooooO! Well, technically you could. It would be more fun to get out and do something though. Sadly, it looks like the weather report I saw a few days ago was wrong. It was supposed to be dry today.... not 4 degrees from snowing. So perhaps its not the best weekend to hit the trails. :-\
Perhaps not. I have lots of boring stuff to do, like figure out what to do with my brakes, taxes, figure out what to do about doctors saying Eve's arms don't hurt. Ya know, grumblables.
They don't hurt. or are not injured? I have plenty of things that hurt that I don't consider injuries. Like my dumb elbow and crazy wrist.
But the brakes are easyish to do. But taxes just suck. Period.
So slow. So stagnant. So dead and rotten: The Forums.
No kidding. This forums is the deads.
We need some life in here...
I have some peppers that are rather lively!
Cool. Let's make a snack!
Sounds like a plan. I made some rather pleasant salsa last week. Seems that a little lime juice makes a big difference. That and letting it stew for a little while (the taste just kept getting better with age.)
Awesome. Maybe Randomland needs a Culinary Experiments and Adventures in Confectionery board :) I'd put a thing on there every once in a while...such as "Why did I try to make tortillas?"
Defiantly. I could post about my attempts in 'perfecting the salsa'.
I just don't know where to put such a thing...It seems that our Recreation and Entertainment category is a bit too broad...as I only post things which I find somewhat fun. I shuffle things around from time to time to try and make topics more evenly dispersed, though. Still, I don't know where a Food Things board would go.
Make it arts and entertainment? The art of cooking? The art of welding? Hmm.
This Forum Is Either Dead or Dying
Its not that bad. There have been a few posts here and there. Not exactly a teaming hub of culture and information.. but then again there are only four of us.
Yeah, all 1 + (0.9) + (0.5) + (0.25) of us.
I think there is a (.002) or two to consider as well :)
To bad that random British guy never showed back up.
Yeah, that would be cool. But how do we entice people to participate (without being creepy)?
We need a little "crickets" emoticon...
It might get over used :) Just make script to auto post it to this thread every other day.
That reminds me.... I made a whole bunch of emoticons for another forum (never a cricket one though)... I wonder if they are still in use there?
Yep! They are! I'm even listed in the credits still.
I have NO idea where the non-jpeg version of those files are... :(
Cool. I had forgotten what those looked like. They are pretty nice. We should add them here for whoever wants to use them (as avatars or whatever.)
Yeah, those are cool! And we could always use some more homegrown art on Randomland. I seem to remember those being made with your mostly-dead laptop, though I could be wrong.
That's right I did make them with my mostly dead laptop. In that case they are still around somewhere then. I should look for them sometime...
Definitely. They were very good.
Now brad can stop saying that no one has posted :)
Brad's complaint-to-post ratio was always rather high.
(By contrast, I post TO complain) :)
:(
I guess I should either post more or complain less.
Just post more :) Complain all you like. I need to post more too.
:o ??? ::)
This is super cool moving text! Too bad you cant set a region for it to move in!
Ok. Anyway. Um, Yeah.
Oh man, what a letdown.
I haven't been on Randomland in a couple of days and....yeah, nobody posted.
Same here. Whats up with that?
You and I post most everything. And Brad seasons the forum with his opinions and frustrations on occasion.
But look at the post count. Me and you are the most annoyingactive members (respectively).
We need something to bring in the common man! Wait.... then it would just be like the youtube comments. Nevermind. We just need to be interestinger.
Quote from: Nick on Apr 07, 2010, 11:40 PMWe just need to be interestinger.
I totally agree. How should we start? Buy a $100 demolition car? Run through the streets with watermelons on our heads? Build a rollercoaster in your backyard? And video tape it all (and hire someone to spliceit together to make it look exciting!)?
We should start by moving a certain honda and geo to the scap yard..... Doing unspeakable things to the frames in the process. And recording it all! Then perhaps a $100 demo car... or a suri kart... I could put another $100 into that and still be happy (perhaps get some a-arms and shocks......................)
name a time!
Man, this forum is dead this week.
Taxes :(
Ours didn't take too long. Getting TurboTax is worth the $50, or whatever it costs, even if our taxes are stupid-simple to do. You could've borrowed it, but I gather it's a little late for that.
I used their online version. Costs about the same to do both the state and federal. Stupid easy to do so I guess its worth the money (even though I could have printed the forms and done it for the price of a stamp.. but yes, it is too late for that :))
Yeah, sometimes it's worth paying a few bucks to do it the simple way. Of course, they could design the forms in a simpler manner instead. Even that 1040EZ form seems unnecessarily complicated for my purposes...like they do it on purpose.
We need a "black helicopters" icon, too :)
Yes we do. :)
Another thing they could do is actually create a web based filing application and host it on the IRS site. Then you could fill it out and file it or print it. All funded by the tax dollars that you are paying. Though if done by the government, it will suck. Just a PDF that does some auto calculations would be nice, yet somehow still too much to ask.
Sooooooooo dead.
I'm hoping the forums are just in a coma, and one day they'll just spring back to life without warning.
Tada! I'm back!
Maybe not life, but present, nonetheless
Sooooo dead
It needs said: this forum is dead.
Its not dead, its just in the slow period of its activity cycle. Give it a few days and there will be new life springing forth!
Seriously, nobody posted yesterday. Sad. I should review our awesome steering wheel videos :) then we'll have something to post about.
I had the intention of making more logo mock ups to go along with yours. But then I got distracted making food and looking at putting android on my phone..... seems it can be run from a flash card.
That could be fun. Do it as a "just because I can" thing. Whcich reminds me, I have an "extra" iPhone which needs repaired and jailbroken/Andriod-ed ("andriot?") Perhaps we need a dedicated thread (and some Randomland articles) on this.
Android seems a little unsupported for most of the devices not originally equipped with it. Driver support does not exist from the hardware manufactures so everything is hacked together. Like with my phone, supposedly the touch screen works and the external speaker but almost nothing else. And its just a phone so I think developers lost most of their interest. But the iPhone should keep peoples interest for a while, and they will probably get that one working. Its all rather pointless but fun :)
Also, why I need a plasma cutter:
Man, this forum is a bit lackluster of late. And I need to post some steering wheel popping off videos. Cody now has a yard tractor with this feature built in! And it has racing stripes. We should totally make more movies. But actually plan them out, apparently.
Yes!
Man, this forum is so dead!
Dude, man. Does no one posting here anymore? Sooooooooo dead. I made spaghetti. Like a gallon of it.
Hey, want to come over an play in my pool now? The water in the pool is only slightly more wet than the air is outside today.
And probably no warmer :)
I CAN NOW USE THE PEN TOOL IN ILLUSTRATOR! Yay! Add this to my list of completely unimpressive accomplishments!
I traced this picture of a Mario enemy as practice and I finally have the hang of it. Now I can actually attempt to draw something, rather than just doing tracing practice.
Nice.
Wow, that's one frumpy dude, and also really good looking. You should put these files in some depository for the children of the ages. (Or just so you don't lose them again)
I'm not too worried about losing this one as it isn't my drawing. The whole thing is just practice and traced. I'm working on some actual drawings now. They don't look as good as ones I trace though. I'll probably post them to my "I suck at drawing" thread when I'm done.
In another news, Melissa bought our rabbit a harness and a leash. We haven't been able to use it though as we can't get the rabbit to actually wear the harness. She is a little bit grumpy now.
Cool. What do you want to use these images/characters for?
Well I am planning on doing about 100 different character/monster illustrations for my game project. Mostly though I'm just trying to teach myself the skill. I figure I should be able to teach myself to do it at least as well as somebody would be able to teach themselves guitar or programming or whatever. I'll probably never be spectacular, but it'd be a cool thing to be almost competent at.
Being almost competent is pretty cool :) I should know.
Most of my ventures in near competence are short lived. I seem to shelve the skill once I find I am physically and mentally capable of completing it.
Which reminds me, I started another crappy song in LMMS last night. Turns out I wasn't using the Song Editor in exactly its intended method. I might post it, but I only have like 10 seconds of noise.
Speaking of things one is not competent at... We should get out our guitars and goof around sometime.
Yeah, that'd be fun. Too bad I don't know any songs. And not many chords. You might know more than I, by now. Are you still taking Chemekuitar classes?
I finished the last class a few weeks ago. If I can manage to practice enough over the summer I will probably take the intermediate class. But only if I think I have advanced my skills enough to keep up. I still have all my handouts and stuff if you want a few copies. Its easier then you might think to get started! But just as hard as you might think to get good.
Sure! I'll gladly take a copy of those. Maybe it'll help inspire me a little. I was trying to come up with a simple guitar track to overlay on my latest and crappiest song. Sadly, it sounds nothing like battle music, which I think is what was requested.
Perhaps together we can make something that sound ominous and yet rallying.
Everything I make it happenstance. If I try to go for a sound, it doesn't turn out. Guess I need more practice :)
What, no posts? Man, this forum is dead.
Dead and forgotten. Lost into dusty, neglected corners of the internet. To fit for eternity (or until the server breaks) with the other forgotten relics of the 'net; So is randomland.
Poetic. Freakin' depressing. But poetic.
Dude, man. This forum is so dead.
Sorry. I have been rather busy. Golfing for Brent's birthday, helping peoples mave homework videos and doing more work in my grandma's garage. Perhaps soon I will have some time to draupalize with you... and ...
...
...
........ CAMP CAMP!
Oh fellow camper, fear not your shortcomings of the Drupal. I've got my head jammed into their API in hopes that others won't need too. (If you insist, by all means go ahead, but it's a bit messy down there) I'll try to document the code thoroughly in the coming weeks.
And yes: camp, camp!!
I know it's been said before, but MAN! These forums are dead :(
Not dead, only sleeping.
Just like SuriFever?
SuriFever, like many chronic diseases may at times go dormant or seem to go into remission. But, as it cannot be cured, one can be sure that there will be another outbreak. The only question is when. Some known inhibitors of SuriFever are work, camp-campitis, hikeistosis and school. But remember these only serve to mask its effects and keep the SuriFever dormant, they still do not cure it.
SuriFever is a communal disease. Often spreads from person to person around where scrap metal and welders can be found. Be weary of angle-grinders you don't know, the last person using it might have had SuriFever!
Thats the sort of thing I thought should go on the RL-Wiki :)
I like it! Slap it on up, if you haven't already :)
Poor forums. So neglected. It probably feels sad and lonely with nothing but the random search-bot to keep it company.
I'm sorry, I have been slacking on my daily duties. I've been busy(ish) but that should be no excuse! The Randomland Forums must survive!
They must survive at any cost!11
Especially free! Which is close to what it costs to run Randomland :)
Just some electrons and time. Plus he godaddy DNS fees. But those are less then a dollar a month... so who cares. And the internet fees, but that's anything not extra.
I was going to buy 'wikiland, com" yesterday... but its sold. Even though it has no site associated with it. Dang domain squatters!
Yeah, that is definitely a hateable thing. But we got our "randomland.net" going on. We're well entrenched in our almost completely unknown branding. But even grown ups like to pretend, right? We just need to start adding more stuff to the site!
As always. I think we could provide a legitimate service to the web at large by reviewing hiking, camping, biking and picture taking locations. Little guides to guide a little. Comment on honda sighting, trail conditions and if there is a good spot to stage a Sasquatch sighting. That sort of thing. With plenty of pictures. Because without them, it never happened.. or something like that.
That would be cool. Let's start now!
Ok. We need to go some place on a nice day and get some pictures and perhaps some notes. We could start with the Stayton are park you frequent.
Works for me. We've got cameras, bikes, and a wee bit of motivation. And that's a good start.
I find that lack of motivation is my biggest hindrance. Many times I would like to do something, know how and have the capability... but just can't seem to get motivated. Having others on the task/project seems to help though. Kinda like a feedback loop, if you know what I mean.
We just missed randomlands "one year on a new server" anniversary.
I didn't even know, but let's celebrate anyway! I think an appropriate act of celebration would be to go camping...!
Sounds good to me!
The forum's not really dead, but it needs another post. So here we go. Camp, camp.
I second the notion of 'camp, camp.'
I feel like I could use a good week in the woods. Unfortunately, that's not practical right now. But a weekend trip can certainly suffice!
I hear ya. Someplace way out there. With nothing for miles, no people, cars, children or politics. Just blues, greens and browns accompanied by the sweet sound of moving water. Tricking its dance over the rocks and down the mountain. Carving valleys one sand-grain at a time. All accompanied by the sweet smell of chili slowly cooking over a meager fire. Or the crackle of hamburgers cooking in their own grease.
Poetic and inspiring! Let's go! Want to do any Blazer fixup Sunday?
Sure. That sounds good to me. I should go and borrow my grandmas pressure washer for the task...
Woah. Serious bathing power!
It needs it. And I should get the tires looked at. One is low after sitting all that time and it would be nice to know that nothing is wrong with them.
Ugh, so dead.
That it is. Nothing interesting happened this weekend.. that's probably part of the why. I need to do more with the HTMLs, then I would have something to post about.
I became "enchanted" with the forest (because my niece was in town...she's three years old). I also "had for lunch" some steak and "tossed a safe" into my trunk.
I like how adding quotes around already vague statements makes everything almost intolerably confusing.
Of course, this technique can be applied to definitive statements as well. Somehow delegitimize a statement which seemingly has very little room for misinterpretation. For example: I "walked the dog."
Whoa there! Are seriously talking about "walking the dog?" Man, that is just not right!
Hehe. I "help my grandma" over the weekend.
Man, forum...undead yourself
"Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!"
- Frankenstein (1931) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/quotes)
Happy Independence Day, everyone!
Yes! Happy fourth fourth to you and everyone!
Wake up, forums!
Man, this forum is dead...
I did lots of spray painting and sanding (and spray painting)
I did lots of construction. And got rather warm, but we probably did. How did all your sanding and painting turn out?
Pretty good. Cody helped me some more and I got lots of wet-sanded paint particles under my fingernails. He somehow convinced me to take the perfectionist's route and make the surface nice and smooth before spraying the final coat(s). Long live sweat, paint, and metal! I'm going to let it air out for a bit (like, a week). Then I'm going to try and carpet the inside with that fabric I got for my box-box.
Should be nice and fancy, inside and out.
Pictures?
I didn't take any yesterday. But I'll post some from Saturday when I get home. Looks about the same as it does now: hammered black exterior, flat black interior.
So dead...
Knock, knock. Forum's dead.
Tick, tock. Its the death clock.
Not the death clock! This forum needs some life again...or maybe even for the first time. All them Randomlanders are slacking.
Its true. I slack. I slack like a coil of rope laying on the ground. Like the cables in a fallen chair-lift. Oh, how I slack.
Maybe we could just a few more participants. Two is a few too few :(
As brad just mentioned, and then did nothing about, the forums is the Dead. Perhaps something could make it un-dead? Perhaps the body armor of the ancients?
I guess that'd be because I haven't posted much lately. Brad does a commendable job of tracking the Randomland Forums' posts, but a condemnable job of participating. Uh, meany face! >:( And Cody sucks at both. And no one else exists, so that leaves just me and Nick.
And we're almost as exiting in person. Almost.
Dudes...so dead....
That is all so true. And yes, it is so dead. Deader then the winner of a swampdiving competition.
Winning a swampdive causes you to lose your life? Poor incentive, I say.
You just have to go that kind of extreme to win. It is a hazardous sport and all, all those swamp-things in the water and all. kinda like that guy who won the sauna contest. It killed him, but no one will ever beat that record and walk away from it. It is poor incentive though. And that is why some things just should never be made into contests. I mean, really, a sauna contest? Like saunas, swampdiving should only be done at ones leisure.
:) That could make a good tagline.
Man, this forum is languid.
Seriously? No posts? Come on internets. I can't let this forum die!
...uh, camp, camp!
I postedated! And wow, the sites email seems to be working again and I didn't do anything.
Um... "Yo?"
And never mind. Email was never broke. I just had my setting wrong somehow.
Cool, that means I can still sign up for stuff I don't care about and give it my Randomland junk account.
So, I finally got around to getting my camping pictures sorted out. I have quite a few panoramics I want to stitch together, but yeah. Maybe tomorrow I can upload a few batches to the randomnets. Should we make a page with this last adventure's story and pictures? Surely no one will find it, but I need to justify my pictures' existence somehow :)
Go for it! If you don't... then its not likely to happen :( But I will look at it. Perhaps even contribute. We should make a gallery for the trip to. Perhaps use the new drup' to see how it fairs.
I will work on that page. I think I will try uploading them to the test site. That'll force me to find out what needs added to that image system. (it'd be nice to finish that project)
Spleh. Dead.
Not dead, but not active. I've been meaning to uppost some camping pictures, as well as some other snapshots ofthis and that. But yeah, I haven't.
I haven't either. I am bad.
"Bad" in a distinctly non-Michael Jackson way.
Very distinctly a non-Michael Jackson way. Though I am a smooth criminal.
What sort of smooth criminal activities have you engaged in? Please do post it on the internet for all to see and be enlightened by!
I would tell you, but then I would have had to have done them....
It might be me but I think the forum died.
Dead: no. Lethargic: yes. And it lives on in our hearts, or something like that.
Ok, so maybe it is dead.
It lies in wait. Anticipating the day that new life is to be breathed into it. It slumbers in am un-restful sleep, filled with ghastly images of server failure and broken DNS records. One day, perhaps soon, it will rise again into glory. But first we need something interesting to talk about; and to stop letting threads fall by the way side! And, perhaps, more then two and a half people posting. :(
So sad, yet so true. I apparently suck at convincing people to frequent the forum :-\
Dead++
Death is as death does.
I need some camping :(
Me too...September is kind of crowded. And slipping away.
That reminds me: are you planning on going to the Oktoberfest? Next Thursday is the first day. Incidentally, it is the only day I will be in-state.
That sounds like the day to go then. And yes, I had planned on going.
Anyone else thinking about going that day? My sister said something about liking Thursday (because she gets off work early.) And Thursday woks for me (so far.)
DROIDED
First post from an Android.
Nice! How is it? My only experience with them is the android SDK. Should I get one? How are its book and music playing abilities?
Dunno about those yet. Still watching random videos on youtube.
Cool. I think I will be getting some variety of one of those soon. I'm with Courtney with the liking the ability to write applications for it and then freely install them.
I just fixed the mail server (again) Now it requires a login for both sending a receiving email. I though I had that set up before, but I hadn't. And some spammers had figured out a way to trick it into thinking it was sending mail for the randomland domain when it wasn't (or something.) So now its better again. But you may have to change settings if you were using it to send mail.
1. I still plan to go to the Oktoberfest tomorrow (Thursday) evening.
2. Thanks for fixing the mail server again
3. Why did you get a new phone?
4. Cool to #2 and #3
Man, the forums are either dead or dying.
But they were good
They were good
They were really, really, really good
And I probably won't make it to the Oktoberfest. I still have stuff to pack, cameras to empty, and 3 or 4 hours of sleep to get. My sausage will have to wait :( ...which reminds me -- when are we going camping?
Then taunt them until they get angry and bite you
And go get yourself a tetanus shot.Quote from: zourtneyPosted on: Yesterday at 10:10:00 AM

Were you waiting, hovering over the post button for just the right moment? Or is it a sign of imminent campification? I still like the 10-10-10 and perhaps a weekend before or after, if that is still looking to work for people.
That sucks about the O-fest. Though it will probably be raining anyway. I mostly like to enjoy the rain from inside some form of shelter. But for O-fest I will endure it for a bit.
Good luck with that sleep thing! Have fun in California.
Eve is staying home today. We might be able to get enough stuff ready that we can still go-O-festin'. When did you plan on going?
About the 10:10:00 thing -- that's awesome, random chance (or happenstance?). I say Tentin-10-10-10 is good. I think Brad will have to decide what day will work for the other trip...
Cool. I am not sure when I was going to go, but I could meet you down there any time and then find my peoples later, or join them as a big, walkway-clogging group. Or we could carpool if you wanted. Easier to get everyone parked. But if it is raining there might be plenty of parking.
Tenting /|\
10-10-10
Got a new phone to be able to check email while going back and forth between offices.
It is convenient. Perhaps more importantly, you can go on Randomland while in Disneyland. It's a very important thing., you know.
That sentence is rather surreal until you realize that its in response to the one above. Or maybe I'm just tired.
Man, the forum is dead. We should "do stuff."
What variety of "StUFf?"
Good question. We should do...um...fun stuff?
Ok. That's settled. Then when should we do this 'FUn StuFF?"
Sooner, rather than later. Though I would prefer sooner and later.
Ok. Name a time.
Yesterday's tomorrow. Or the day before tomorrow. Give or take a week or so.
So that would be today?
Well, it would be, but it's not. This weekend, it would more likely be.
Perhaps on the great day of sun?
Or the preceding (day of sitting?)
EDIT: actually, I'm pretty sure the Sat in Saturday is more closely related to the word sabbath, as that is the traditional Jewish day of rest. I could ask Webster, but I'm lazy and it's bed time. Plus, I mean, "el sábado," yeah?
Soooooo[rta] dead.
Someone's got to say it: man, this forum is dead...
I get my camera back on the 'after the 6th!!!' Or I guess they are shipping it back to me on the 6th. I might not have it on the 10th :(
That would be a bummer...but no camera is better than no camera, if you know what I mean.
How does it compare to gnome camera?
Absolutely! I think we can summarize as follows:
- No camera = Know camera = Gnome camera. This is a proven fact. See Roper, Cheeses for original work on this theory.
- Having no camera now is better than never having any camera (ie: no camera is better than no camera)
- It is better to have a camera, any camera, than it is to have no camera (ie: no camera is better than no camera)
- Important note: not knowing how to use your camera when you need it is only slightly better than having no camera at all.
Now, take this list and abstract it. I've highlighted our key term for you, so it'll be easier. This generic drivel can apply to anything you view in a positive light. Voter rights, can openers, tripods, sidearms*, arms**, love, automobiles, pants**, cargo tie-downs, the Revolutionary War of these United States of America*, Mexican food**, angle grinders...you name it.
* debatably
** almost indisputably
I see these here random nets are back up. Usually when I say, "this forum is dead," it's not quite that dead. Was it a DNS issue?
It was. The DDClient program had stopped updating the IP. I guess it needed a software update to be compatible with the servers again or something. Not sure really. But it works now.
Cool, because I think I'm addicted.
Yay! I got my camera back! From the looks of it they sent me a brand new one. All the scuffs, scratches and wear marks that I had grown used to are gone. In their place is a sleek, shiny surface of a new camera. It has the same serial number sticker, but it was crooked and had marks from being pulled off of the old camera.
While I will miss all the memories I had with the old camera I am glad to have one with all new parts. Perhaps I will get many more years out of it as opposed to a repaired/refurbished one. Not that it makes much sense to attribute any emotional attachment to a mechanical device. Even if you had carried everywhere with you for a good long time.
So I am back in the pocket-camera scene.
Now camping must commence! As soon as the weather looks a little better anyway.
Cool. Pocket cameras are requisite! Somewhat sadly, today's weather is looking quite nice. I'm not too sad we missed camping last weekend. The weather was pretty miserable where I was. And I at least stepped in a store with tents (though I did not look at them)
Mans the forums are slow todays.
It rained all weekend. So we would have been soaked the whole weekend. It's only a little sad that the arbitrary symmetry of the date got wasted, but that's life.
So true. I heard random people mention the date several times though. And Eve said, "Hey look, it's 10:10 10-10-'10" as we sat in church Sunday morning. So awesome, but only in a manmade, numerically arbitrary way.
Oh, does anyone have any crappy old webcams they're not using? VGA resolution is plenty fine enough. It's just for a stupid programming experiment.
Sure I've got a webcam you can have. It was one of those crazy frys sales they used to have, never even really used it. You can come over and grab it anytime you want. It's in a box in my garage right now, but I'll go and pull it out.
Cool. I think I'll stop by tonight or tomorrow after work. Maybe I can see your arcade buttons too :)
Sounds good. I am home late on tuesdays though, got child birth prep classes. Any other time should work fine.
Ok. And man, this forum is dead.
So dead
Man, what happened? This forum, once vibrant and lively is now dull and dying. So sad :(
No one is posting, which leads to no one replying. :(
That, and at least I personally have been a punk as of late.
Anyone want to go to a 'haunted' forest next weekend?
I too have been slightly punkish. But no more! We should do stuff, though maybe not this weekend, since I'm getting my face ripped apart.
Also, I need to go take some pictures of the leaves before they all blow away.
Rip off your face... of the dinosaurs?
:) if only!
Getting your face ripped apart? What is that alluding to? Dentistry of some sort? Or did you forget to pay for your dentistry... and its being repossessed?
I like the idea of some sort of dentistry-thugs or like maxillofacial grim reaper, but no. Even those could be cool "what the heck" Halloween costumes, I was referring to me having to go to the dentist. Actually, the wisdom tooth pullers :(
That's too bad. Halloween weekend too!
I can tell you experience that having those teeth pulled sucks. Have them put you under if the insurance will cover it. You will wake up and they will be gone, rather then listening to hours of crunching and bone scraping.....
If you can't go under at least get the TV glasses.
It's ok, I'm loading up on candy early :) Yeah, I'm having them put me under, though they said it'll only take about 20-25 minutes. I really don't want them to have my teeth...I'm kind of attached to them. But supposedly it'll prevent a root canal down the road, etc, etc. I'd be more willing if something was currently hurting, of course.
Anyway. Yeah, we should do stuff (but not this weekend).
Well good luck. The worst part is the first week after... and all the food that gets stuck in the sockets that used to hold teeth. Not to try and scare you. Its more a mild discomfort then anything. Sorry your weekend is getting wrecked.
Is it me or did the 'specks' above the 'T's in the logo return?
See a very slight speckling. Is it time for the winter theme again?
Or at least a fall theme.
You're the artist :) Go for it!
Randomland needs some love.
Yep. Agreed. Suggestions? Drupal 7 look ready to use yet?

Close...ish? (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,175.msg3464.html#msg3464)
So dead. So lackluster. So sad.
Wow, this forum is really dead lately. We need some more activity...
I was think just this just yesterday. We all need to do 'stuff,' like some good ol' fashioned swamp diving or the like. There are so few leaves left on the trees to photograph. Hike hike.
So dead...hike hike indeed! What's up with rain on the weekend and sun during the week? I propose a shift. We can start by having an extra long weekend :)
Sounds like a great idea. Having the weekdays based on the weather would be wonderful. Except you might find yourself working for a month straight in the winter and a month off in the summer :)
"The National Weather Service is invoking a nation-wide climatic phase shift, effective Wednesday, November 17th and Thursday, November 18th. Please report to work as scheduled on Monday, November 19th."
Ok, that'd be really confusing.
Confusing, but oh so interesting. People would be complaining and rejoicing the entire time!
Can you imagine trying to program a calendar? You'd be guaranteed to be wrong for future dates and past data would have to be stored. Scheduling anything would be nightmarish. Which is why it's fun to think up ridiculous thing like that.
Just make EVERYTHING connected to the internet in one way or another. Or have wireless (FM or AM band) transmissions that update electronics to the new calendar. You would also have to stop using any kind of analog calendar, so no more paper wall calendars. Move on up to the digital wall calendar.
But yes this would all be super ridiculous. And all that infrastructure would only be useful if the dated got mucked several times a year. Nightmare ++.
So yeah, Poot poot.
Dudes, it snowed.
Dude it did. Made driving pretty fun this morning. Had to be really easy on the gas to keep the rear end from slipping into the other lane.
BUT SNOW! And ice.
Some people really don't know how to deal with ice :) Some dude was spinning his tires trying to get started at the market/hawthorn intersection, and he just wouldn't let off on the gas. Spun his tires the whole way, only barely getting any speed and sliding in a way that made me nervous. But I rant.
Mans, this forum is like mega-the-deads lately. And simultaneously absolutely nothing like MegaDeath. I blame myself. This forum needs more guitar solos.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Thanksgiving happiness to all and to all a happy Thanksgiving!
A bit belated, but the same to you and everyone.
Wow, this forum is dead. I mean, I'm guessing by now a certain board member has a bit of news to share. I mean, with all thus silence, you'd almost be tempted to think that this board is not the coolest place on the internets. :-\
One might think that, but they would be mistaken. This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest places on the internet. That reminds me that its about time to update the banner again. Something snowy and whimsical.
Also we should go up to the snow.
Also, Brad, how is your situation going? Baby stuff good? Work stuff good? We all (all of us) do things far to seldom anymore. I understand the busyness though. I am just as guilty. But something (as has been said many times before) should be done. At some time anyway.
Anyway. Yeah. It sounds like there is a rhinoceros loose downstairs....
Ditto.

Apparently there is an epidemic of loose downstairs rhinoceroses.
Yeah... I'm home now. Baby is doing good. I'm really tired. Got about a week left of time off before I go back to work. It'll most likely be about a month or so before I'll be able to go and do anything like a day trip or whatever. But I'd really like to go out and do something as soon as I'm able to.
Yeah man, like Rhinosaurus Rex!
This forum is so dead. Is that my fault?
If a tree falls in the forest?
If a post is made to an empty forum?
Yes

If a tree falls, in the forest, an empty forum is made. Oh how it ails me so!
Dang silent trees falling in empty forums!
Does a silent tree, falling in an empty forum, leave a post?
I think there is going to be another push to either go to the snow or the zoo lights this weekend. If anyone is interested in joining up, say 'Yo'.
Give a man a tree, and he will make a post. Give a man a forum, and he will make a tree of posts.
Unfotunately, I'll be busy this weekend :( I did see the zoo lights on Saturday. It was cool.
We need to be making posts of trees.
Ok. Just thought I would offer. Have fun, whatever your doing.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and we are headed up to see some of Eve's family, friends, etc. So this weekend is full. And Christmas weekend, too. After that, I don't know. We should do stuff. I have a pumpkin that needs obliterated :)
So dead :-\
Dead indeed.
Still got that pumpkin? I feel a need to fill something with black powder and make it splatter.... must go to the woods for this though. And erect some safety walls. Or use a gravel pit.
And Hike hike. Happy holidays.
And, by the way, Portal is on sale for $3.74 for anyone who does not yet have it. Get it. Its awesome.
I bought it for Anna at $2.25. It must have gone more on sale. What annoys me is that about a week ago I bought it for myself for the full $15 price. Oh well. And if you want to send me your Steam name or something I can add you to my friends list. Yep.
I am Lichen! Green crusty thing that grows on rocks!
Dude.... SpaceRobot5, add me.
What? I'm so confused!
As for woodsiness, what is everyone doing next week? I have at least a few days off...
I have the whole week off and no concrete plans, just a few tasks that have flexible time tables. Name a day and I will make it so!@
Concrete task 1: I'm sure my mom would love you to repave her driveway. If you offer to pour the concrete, I bet she'll buy :)
I found no SpaceRobot5 to add to my friends list.
What's up with the SpaceRobot5? Nobody even knows if he's "alive"...
We should do stuff Thursday..!
OK! What?
Well, I've been needing a hike-hike. But it will likely not be good weather for such a venture. So, either that (with the expectation of wetness) or! the fixing of Randomland. I think the sevenization is at hand.
The weather might be manageable Thursday. But we can always wear coats and hats. I am up for it as long as its not pouring.
Yeah, and we could go somewher close, like that hikey-park near Lyons. I'm mostly waterproof and it'd be good to get outside!
Despite being impossible to find and possibly not alive I added you to my friends list Jacsveus.
YAAAAAY! NOW WE CAN ALL BE FRIENDS!!!
I want to be friends with the space robot. He may not have a soul, but is alone and far from home.
Randomland is back up again! Did anyone else notice the downtime last night?
I did notice, actually. Yay for having my randomnets back.
This reminds me...we should probably work on some sort of super-basic backup system. Like dump the database and copy everything to an external drive once every few months or something. But such a discussion probably belongs elsewhere (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/board,8.0.html).
There used to be a basic backup. But then the external hard drive died.
The down time was caused by a power outage, or 8. None of them for more then a few minuets, but more then long enough to reset/turn off everything. Then the ddclient refused to update the IP address for the domain with zoneedit. Then I couldn't get zoneedit to let me log in... But its fixed now.
Thank you, serverman. I need my fix. Need my fix. NEed My fIx.,.,
It is funny how we all notice the downtime but nobody ever posts anything or adds new content. What keeps bringing us back? It is a mystery...
Yeah, that's probably because we are all actually pretty boring.
We all return for the hope of something new.
True true. Even when returning for the hope of something we already knew (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,10.0.html) :)
Its twenty Xd6! Or, um. Twenty even, I mean.
A new year, another dead forum. More busy people :) My vow was to be 12% more interesting this this yeah. I hope it works.
Seems like a highly subjective goal -- clever! :) An interesting start might be to go on a hunt for my pumpkin. I could tell you where it is, but that seems somehow less interesting..!
Last I saw it, it was in front of your apartment. Perhaps a clue or two?
O (http://test.randomland.net/node/1).K (http://test.randomland.net/node/2). :)
I could probably find it without too much trouble :)
It's barely but a drive and a short hike away!
so dead :(
Dead, but still warm.
I added a randomlandish logo to the google apps pages (if anyone ever uses them) It should show up on the docs (http://docs.randomland.net), calendar (http://cal.randomland.net), mail (http://mail.randomland.net) and everything else once the cache wears off.
I am kinda liking the whole apps thing. Makes the randomland email addresses a little more stable, and they can be easily moved to a new server at any time. Like if we ever get a static IP or better hosting. Not that there is anything wrong with our current hosting. Aside from low bandwidth and people thinking we are spam because we have a dynamic IP. But that's all better now! I will see if I can get the whole system working off the google servers, then we can all be flooded in log watches and denyhost entries if we like.
And poo. I was looking at pictures, and its been more then a year since we made that bike stand.... We should do something!
That bike stand is still working quite well, I might add. I do wish the bikes would come down off it more often though :-\ We do need to do more stuff. Got any projects to do?
I am intending on making an ottoman before valentines. But that's about it. I think I would also like to make a coffee table with magazine storage.
How about everyone else? Projects? Other then the game cabinet that we all know about. Which is cool by the way.
Nearly unprecedented levels of deadness! Did everyone move to Cambodia or something?
Sorry I forgot to tell you, we've given up on Randomland in favor of clandestine meetings in dental offices.
Well, I guess I am out of the loop. And getting too little dental work done....
:) at least four words of that sentence at true...at least! Yeah, sorry Randomland. You can blame me. I'm back and lame as ever!
The arcade machine project is indeed awesome. I want to see it in action!
I don't really have any construction projects brewing, but I could probably think of something if I thought about it for a minute or two.
Come on forums! Don't die!
1..2...3... CLEAR! Bzzzzt!
Hit her again!
Clear! Bzzzzzzzrrrrt!
We have a faint pulse. I think she's going to make it.
It's sunny out. Yet I am in. :(
Same here. And I am even at home :-\
Are you still down with the sickness?
All of my fish died today. 7 in total, including the pleco I've had since forever. I think some kind of containment or poison got in the water because they all died pretty much at the exact same time. I'm guessing the culprit is an air freshener thing which got set on top of the fish tank. Although it had been there for a week or so, not sure why it'd suddenly just kill them all at once.
Draining the water out of it now. I'll be storing the tank and cabinet in the garage until I feel like I'm ready to start a fish tank again.
Sorry to heat that. That really sucks. I rather liked your fish.
Did you check and make sure the heater didn't spaz out and cook them all? Either way I will make a note to keep air fresheners away from the tanks.
The tank was a little warmer than normal, about 87-ish degrees. That doesn't seem quite hot enough to kill all the fish at the same time, but I'm not sure. Also not sure about the air freshener but I don't know what else could have done it. They do say "keep away from children and pets" on them.
Sorry about your fish :( you've had at least some of them for a long time. Sucky...
@Nick, yeah, Eve and I still plan on coming to your thing (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,153.msg3756.html#msg3756). I think Eve said it's a two o'clock? I look forward to some uninfected fun!
Oh the disappointment of the gray diamonds!
So dead.
Happy VD!
Testing from my tappy phone. I just installed the Tapatalk (http://tapatalk.com) plugin. So far, so good.
Oh! But that costs money!
Cost aside, how is it?
I noticed a little alert notifying me of the forums new iphone/itouch compatibility just recently when checking from my music podders.
Very handy. It's quicker than visiting the actual site, and things are (of course) scaled better to the screen.
And yeah, I'm sure we can disable that message, if we want. Do we want?
Is there a way that it will remember that I have seen it and not show it to me again?
Also, what about the native HTML+css mebile version for SMF? Its only for SMF 2, but its there.
I suppose if we find the right part in the code, we can set a cookie. Simple, in theory.
And yes, I still would like (prefer?) a mobile theme. Both for randomland and the forums. How hard is it to migrate to 2.x, anyway?
Its as easy as running a script, as far as posts and users are concerned.
I don't know if there was a drupal plugin for it to bridge the users at the time I was playing with it. And the theme didn't import exactly looking like it did. Things were a little off, but useable.
Here is a (volatile) link to the test forums. The soft link in the file system gets broken every time the test site gets redone. Really, I should just make an apache alias for the folder...
http://test.randomland.net/forums/
Edit: Just a moment... upgrading to SMF RC5
The system is down! Oh noes!
Ok. Feel free to have a look now. I think all the users should be there. Its set up with a database copy from today.
I am not sure how to fix the oddities of the theme. But... I am all for getting a new theme.
Also, installed a new theme.
To see it just set your theme to it on the test forum.
http://test.randomland.net/forums/index.php?action=theme;sa=pick; <- if that link does not work, then its under appearance in the profile settings.
Edit: Oh yeah, its called actualism by the way. I am only slightly happy with its colors... but I like the layout. Colors are easy to change.
Also. The theme that the current one is based off of has an RC5 version available. So just upgrading our current one should be a easy if we wanted.
Opinions?
Cool. It works! Should we work on giving it a more spifftastic theme?
Yeah, I would like to start modificating the actualism theme (or some other if you find one that you have a prefrence for.)
See the edits on my previous post if you don't know what I am talking about :) I never know if people see those when they post so close to the edit time.
Hmm, it would seem this app sometimes fails to display edits. Need to bug them a report, I suppose.
Anyway, I'll look at the theme on a real screen when I get home.
http://test.randomland.net/forums
I played with the forum theme just a little. It still is far from what I would see as 'looking good'
What are peoples thoughts on colors? Blue, green grey like this one? Green, brown, tan? Show me a pallet!
Ok. I'm liking the green and brown "earthen" colors lately. I'll try to play with some tonight. Let's maybe discuss this in the Test Site Discussion (http://randomland.net/forums/index.php/topic,175.0.html) or somewhere close, lest I lose it!
On a slightly related note, I've been keeping copies of my coding themes. Lots of greens and browns there, too. I think we should slap those somewhere.
Man, this forum is comparitively dead today...
I need a new project. My arcade project is postponed for at least a month or two (or more) due to an unexpectedly early birth. So I don't have anybody to cut my parts out for me.
Will try to wok on my game project, but that is difficult to do with small blocks of time to work on things. Also it doesn't give me anything to think about or plan when I'm not sitting in front of my home computer.
I'm open for ideas.
Ok, stupid question, but: what do you gain by waiting to get your wood cut by the CNC machine? (other than proof of plan accuracy and general "that's really freaking cool"-ness)? Is there something that's unreasonably hard to do with your oh-so-20th-century tools?
Lame project ideas:
- Make Blazer camp-worthy
- Make something with Kydex (I have a brewing, simple project)
- Work on RPG (role playing game)
Work on RPG (rocket propelled grenade)- Make unsucky Randomland themes (mobile and desktop versions)
- Make videos for internets
- Fix picture module (yeah, that's likely my responsibility)
- Make gimpy music!
- Build a box (they're always handy)
- Spread the randomnets (randomland's name on social networks)
Well, there you have it. I doubt any of those are particularly interesting.
The curves of the sides and stuff are something I'm not skilled enough to free-hand with a router. Somebody else might be... but certainly not me. Also the control panel presents a problem as the placement is a bit more precise than I can get with a drill and a hole saw.
I could probably make something arcade cabinet-ish... but it wouldn't really come out "professional" looking... which is sorta what I'm going for.
I am considering making a temporary 2-player control box that could plug into a computer and play if it is going a really long time to get the actual arcade cabinet done. Just made out of scrap materials or something. Dunno if that is a waste of time or not.
Making stuff out of wood is never a waste of time! At least, not for me, because I need all the practice I can get. I say go for it.
Ever have one of those moments when programming where you feel like a complete moron?
I just did. Been working on the Flash client for my RPG game, trying to fix a bug where the wrong map is loaded when leaving the first map. It always loaded the first (ID #0) map, no matter what I did.... It even told me that the I was loading the correct map (ID #1) but on the screen it still showed the first map! Really frustrating and spent a bunch of time trying to figure it out and track where the bug was.
Turns out that when I changed grid size from 20x20 to 15x15 I fixed the first map data and then copy and pasted it over all the other map data to make them the right size. I forgot to go back and make the maps all different again... So in reality the program was working the entire time and loading the correct map but all the maps were exactly the same!!!!
So yeah, that was a waste of a few hours.
I usually feel like a complete moron when programming. Like how it routinely takes me 8 hours to write 2 lines of productive code? Yeah...
It makes me feel less bad when I hear things like that. That perhaps my slowness is less me sucking and more the norm.
Last Friday though... I actually thought I was pretty good. I reproduced the essential functionality of $50 (a year) program in 36 lines of code. Including whitespace and comments.
If you ever need a viewer application for Crystal Reports... don't buy one, it's really easy to make one.
What did you write it in? Just out of curiousity
:-[ VB.NET....
(eww)--;
At least it's not VB6...or older. Because that'd be disgusting.
I would have done it in C# .NET or C++ .NET but nobody else at the city knows those languages.
Well, managed C++ should be avoided asmuch as possible...unless you like headaches. (It's kinda like digging through a scrapyard to build yourself a new car...)
But C# was pretty cool last time I tried it. I've since done a little Java programming and realized that C# is almost a direct copy of it. Syntactically and architecturally.
Since I have my work's Mac to "play" with, I'm trying to learn a little Objective-C in my "free time". I haven't even made it through "Hello World" :P
Pootermobile!
Totally. Pooter.
Legend (http://pootermobile.urbanup.com/625642) has it that a "pootermobile" is a toy car which has been lit on fire, then played with. I think we should make a life-size replica :)
I like wherever you are getting these legends.
Environmental concerns aside, getting, burning (likely rendering inoperable ) and then playing with a car sounds like quite an undertaking.
How about just a life-sized car to play with? You can probably make it look burnt pretty easily :)
Yeah, it (http://pootermobile.urbanup.com/625642)'s really not a good idea. Burning cars is a horrible idea (reserved for environmental extremists...?)
Yes, I would much rather just take a crap truck up in the woods, park it, then go on a long hike. Let's do that instead!
OK! Hike-hike!!!
Speaking of hiking, REI has a %20 off coupon for their outlet store today.
Making a 63L backpack ~$50 (it was $44 earlier in the week >:( )
http://www.rei.com/product/814088 I might get it.....
Yeah, I often think about getting one of those. I don't know if I'd use it often enough to justify the price. But when you need a good pack, you need a good pack.
I got a giftcard for REI... so it makes it a little easier to decide on getting one. Most are rather pricey. But a medium sized one for not too much would be ok. I would really like to try backpacking this summer, so that helps the motivation too.
All discussion topics seem to be converging on this thread... Partially my fault perhaps.
We have more topics than we do distinct areas of interest :)
Nothing new on Randomland since this morning? What a letdown!
Nothing new all weekend :(
Yeah, true. The forums is the dead. But Brad and I did stuff. And he totally cut off Melissa's hunting ground before she even had a chance! She was not happy.
We need some new Randomland site content. Got any brewing ideas? I have a "laundry soap container and a knife" idea I'll write up some day...
How dare he stop Melissa from her hunting! (Huh..what?) How was the get together? Rather sorry I missed it.
I bought a $10 knife off of Amazon, I might write up a review of it after I manage to get it sharp.
Do share about the laundry soap?
I finally got a nice lil' Ka-Bar. We should go camping so we can "test" it. Seems like a good excuse, anyway. Then we could review that as well...not that the internet needs another Ka-Bar review :P
Forum. Dead.
Discussion: Deceased.
Man, the forum went dead again. So poot.
???
Poot indeed.
Whats the happening with all the everyone? Good goings all around?
Yep. Just pootin' away. We should "do" "stuff".
According to the statesmen journal they are cutting all computer science at north...
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20110506/UPDATE/110506045/1001
QuoteNorth Salem High School students will lose the business technology and computer science programs.
Man, that sucks. Big time. In principal, cutting those programs sounds like the responsible thing to do...but you know what? That's the only thing I enjoyed in high school.
And I probably would've keeled over in Data Structures (college) had I not had them beaten into me by the honorable Sir Kirkwood. Ok, I don't believe he was ever knighted, but.....AP Fish, woohoo!!!!1 Good times.
Sad times.
And N-Tech! I mourn for thee (though, was that cut a while ago??) Every young man needs to learn, first hand, the affects of concrete on a Pentium 90 processor (...or whatever's fittingly old these days. P4's?)
I just hope Computer Heaven has kept ahold its little secret :)
That sucks. Cutting computer science is almost as bad as cutting biology! Especially in this day, where half the jobs you might consider will be working with computers. Its a dis-service to the students that they will have no avenue to learn about for loops and semaphores other than online.
Like Zourtney said, the computer programs were about the only thing I liked in high-school. Without those classes I probably would have still pursued it, but I would have been less ready for 'real' school.
Sadly I never had but one pascal class with Kirkwood. I feel slightly robbed at not getting that experience. But only slightly. I wonder what Reams, Kirkwood and Smith will be up to these days. I still have a router in my closet someplace...
Dudes, we should do stuff.
Yeah, Dude. We should. Saturday? Fire in the rain? Something?
I noticed Randomland was done most of the day. Server problems?
Terry noticed too :)
The dumb ddclient program didn't update the DNS again. Luckaly I had set up the gateway router to have its own little DNS so I could SSH-leapfrog to the server and restart the offending service.
I think I will be upgrading the server to Scientific Linux 6 soon. Its Red Hat 6, but without the red hat. And since CentOS seems to be in slight dissaray as of late (didn't their head dude get arrested or something?) I figured it would be a better bet to go with SC-Linux then waiting for CentOS to roll around. Its either that or Fedora XX. But I think the somewhat stable RedHat 6 would be a better way to go. Unless we need cutting edge everything.
Anyway, that was all just to say that hopefully having a newer version of ddclient will help (almost silly to change the whole OS to get one program updated.... but that's the fun of linux! And I don't like trying to sole 1000 dependencies for the couple of packages that I would prefer to be newer (like the nicer GIT client has major bugs on CentOS 5.5 and cant be upgraded without a huge headache.)
Anyway. Yeah. Poots and happy birthday to Zourtney, if that is your real birthday...
Terry noticed?! I haven't heard from him in ages.
Anyway, I noticed too. When I went to fill up with gas, my 'gas' subdomain was unavailable. It only took me one slice of garlic bread to realize the other subdomains' IP addresses had changed, but that one had not. I moved it up the list, now right below 'test' after fixing it. All is better (for now).
Is it in the ddclient config file? They all need to be updated individually, unfortunately.
If its not in there, I would be happy to add it. Though I sure you could figure it out easily enough.
Terry only noticed because his site is also hosted on the server :P
That must have been what the mysterious entries were! I only updated it on ZoneEdit's site, so I think that's a "no". How often does the IP change?
Occasionally.
Mysterious entries? Into what?
Um, nevermind. I have no idea what I'm talking about. The only thing I don't recognize, if fact, it google._domainkey.
That's for the google apps thing.
Yeah, I figured as much. I guess I shouldn't write stuff when I have no idea what I'm talking about. Or can't even properly remember what I was thinking ???
But it keeps things interesting!
Keeps me on the cusp of 2,000 posts, at least
I have seen people with more posts who were only members of the respective forums for about 4 1/2 months! Crazyness.
And I've been at this for years. I am so inadequate.
wowitsdead.
Melissa and Luke bought me an awesome new macro lens. I will post some test pics soon...
Cool, what sort?
It's a 100mm 2.8f macro lens. It's pretty big and heavy, but it has really fast and quiet USM auto-focus and can get pretty darn close. Also the barrel doesn't extend/collapse when focusing and it has a full-time manual focus adjustment ring thing. So you can adjust the focus precisely without switching out of auto-focus.
So far, I like it. But I haven't had much chance to use it. You need pretty good light to take really close macro shots, and I ran out of time yesterday. I'd like to see what happens if I put the clip on macro thing on the front of it. Maybe I can take a picture of an ant's eyeball or something...
Cool. We should go test it out. What's everyone doing Monday? We should do stuff, because I'm otherwise boringful.
Ok, stupid question (with the wrong terminology, most likely)...the 100mm part is going to give you a fairly narrow sight picture, I get that. But how is the focal distance? I mean, can you, for example, focus on a subject 10 feet away (with or without a narrow depth of field)? Or are you effectively so near-sighted that you can focus on anything far away?
I guess I don't understand the difference between a "macro" lens and a "fixed zoom" lens.
:-) From some dude on betterphoto.com/forms/ :
"A telephoto lens technically is one that is designed such that its actual length is less than its optical focal length. More generally, it refers to long focal length lenses that give a narrow angle of view and "bring distant objects closer."
A macro lens is one that focuses very close so that it can project a 1/2 life-size or larger image onto the film or sensor."
Yeah, its all about focal length. And projecting an image of a far-off thing or a close-up thing. I can't draw pictures here so thats the best I can do. Not that I really understand it well enough. They did cover it for 20min in physics once though...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_photography
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_length
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephoto_lens
I think a major difference is concave VS convex lenses making enlargements rather then reductions... but I am mostly just guessing. It would be nice if the wiki had a lens arrangement diagram for the macro like they do the telephoto.
And here is a page I once read a while ago. I think its relevant but don't have time to read it again.
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lenses.htm
Good reading, especially the last link. Lots of stuff I know, some I didn't. The "macro" page is a great reminder of how dumb I am :P And as far as glass/optics theory is cornerned, I'm even dumber...
From Wikipedia:
QuoteTo avoid this [lighting] problem, many photographers use telephoto macro lenses, typically with focal lengths from about 100 to 200 mm. These are popular as they permit sufficient distance for lighting between the camera and the subject.
So, I guess much of what I was asking is, "is it a telephoto macro lens?"
Yeah, my lens is both a telephoto and a macro lens. It is also a 1:1, meaning that it projects a full lifesize image onto the sensor at the minimum focus distance of 1'.
The forums live again?
From death comes undeath! Cursed to wander this world in ghastly confusion. Knowing not when sleep comes again! Arise, Server, ARISE!
And here the forums lie, dead again.
But cow how long!?
If a proper response requires quantification in some sort of bovine units, I will need guidance. Otherwise: 7.
Hehehehe HAHAHAH! That made me laugh.
Oh, so are the dangers of making quick replies on phones that think they know what I am trying to type. Most time it actually does know what it is I was trying to say, just not that time.
A more accurate recount:
"But for how long?
I think it got cow from how and I deleted the wrong word and then retyped how... but I am not sure.
Actually, that doesn't make sense. That would put them in the other order. So the answer is: I just can't type. Especially on a phone.
:) ok, I thought maybe I missed something or you were being well...Nickish. What do you say to a cow-how swamp-dive?
Edited because I can't type either :P
Swamp-dive cow-now!
We should do something some night this week. Take some bikes out someplace and have a ride perhaps. Also, you should come over some time so we can show you the animal routine. We will feed you fire-side sausages if you like :)
So dead. So sad.
Very dead.
I'll just leave this here...

Duuuuuude, man. You just won the Golden Brachiosaur Award. Congrats.
Really! I have had my eye on the Golden Brachiosaur for some time. But I never thought that I had a chance. Now for the Platinum Pachycephalosaurs...
Quote from: Nick on Jun 16, 2011, 11:58 PMNow for the Platinum Pachycephalosaurs...
Ah yes! I eagerly await your findings.
In the meanwhile, I'll be watching computer science demonstrations from 1968 (http://youtu.be/JfIgzSoTMOs) (strangely fascinating)
A boring anecdote from lunch yesterday:
I pull up to the Carl's Jr drive thru.
Male voice: Welcome to Carl's Jr! Would like to try out hand-breaded chicken fillet sandwich today?
Me: Uh... just a minute please.
Female voice: Would you like to upgrade that to two minutes?
Me: *confused for a moment* Oh... I don't think so.
Female voice: *kind of laughing at me* OK.
Automated greetings at fast food places make me feel like an idiot.
You have to give her points for the use of wit in a drive through. Unless she is blindly asking people to upgrade everything.
"Do you have change for a 20?"
"Would you like to upgrade that to change for a 50??"
Well. To continue a conversation from another thread...
The weed-pulling took a lot (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html) longer then was expected. But we got it done. But no blazering got done. Anyone want to work on it this week after the workings times? I am free tonight and tomorrow night for as far as I know.
Sure, sounds like alot of fun! Let's do it tomorrow. What do you want to do? (other than free it from the Suburban's jail)
Clean it out (again) Its still got some of yours or brads stuff in it. Also put the new(er) headliner in to stop the moisture problem. And maybe bypass the ignition system... or add a switch to the system so when the ignition get stuck you can still turn the thing off. It would be nice to completely replace the ignition switch, but I'm not sure that would be easy. Better ti leave it in the run position and add a ON/OFF switch and a start button? And a hidden lock someplace that disables everything.
Beyond that I plan on flushing the radiator again tonight. Its had some cleaning stuff in it for a while. See if that helps the overheating problem.
Cool. Yeah, I'm up for that (probably tomorrow, not today). Have any more of those giant computer case switches laying around? That would be awesome for something!
I might! I have some of the huge push-button ones. None of the awesome flip ones though. I look on line for a few moments and found a replacement ignition lock for $15 shipped... so that might be the way to go. Forum people say it only takes an hour or so to change out.
I've got a couple of arcade buttons left over if you want :)
Haha! That would be awesome for something. To bad they are momentary switches... unless we want to make a digital interior light dimmer or something along those lines :)
Sounds perfect for an ignition switch though, doesn't it? Oooh the possibilities!
Still up for doing something this evening?
I am! And if you like we have leftover taco makings!@!!!
I didn't do anything to it last night. I ended up making dinner instead.
Any other Randomlandiens want to come mess with the hobomobile?
Brad, I saw your knife in the back of it someplace. Not that I haven't had a dozen opportunities to get it back to you. If you like I can clean and sharpen it. It might have a little oxidation from sitting in there.
That'd be awesome thanks!
*crickets*
Wow, it's dead.
It sure is...
We need to get some defibrillators in here.
That should put some life back in to those crickets! Is it time to go camping again? I say, "yes"
Always: Yes.
I noticed the new best and wost tech thread. might be cool to have one for autos and what not as well.
Sounds like fun. For like Hyabusa Smart cars and stuff :) Some day we may need to prune and merge for sanity's sake. Until then, let's go for it!
Dead. So dead.
Camp camp?
Is that a question?!
A suggestion!
Either way, the correct answer is undoubtedly "yes."
These internets are dead!
Not so dead as busy. Things have been happening! The stuff have been dome. Three bolts got taken off a certain vehicle! The wordpresses are annoying me! Stuffs'a happn'in.
1 bolt per hour, hooooooyeah!
What's is the Presses do now?
Mostly its because I can't find anything (I am just not used to the admin menus yet)
BUT! I have had no luck in finding a way to PUBLICLY search the media library. People online just want you to create a post/page for each image or are clueless. One would think this would be a common request and therefor exist is some form. Or I might suck at finding settings/pluins to do what I want.
I installed a search plugin that was supposed to add post attachments to the search results, but no luck with that.
Bumpity, bump-bump. This forum is so dead. Poodlesticks.
Who shot the forums?
Maybe it was me. I haven't done enough forum-worthy things lately, perhaps.
Dead; the forums are.
There was a hawk on the roof of my car this morning. It was cool. I think it might have been an American kestrel based on its colors. I didn't get a real long look at it before a crow dive bombed it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33rw/4132848750/lightbox/ <- it looked allot like that.
Wildlife = Cool
Speaking of which, I almost had a squirrel take a blackberry from my hand today. He was quite social and unafraid of me...Unfortunately I was standing in such a position that the squirrel had no way of getting to my hand without hang gliding off of the branch he was on. That would have been an awesome sight. I got within a foot or so though and that is cool in itself.
That's cool. You should get him friendly enough to hangout and take nuts from you!
But - beware the plague!
Like the doornail and dodos of fables and legend, so is the forum.
Dead indeed. Let's liven it up!
But it's just so dead...dead like my recent attempt to program in Java....
I don't know from much experience, but java seemed like a nightmare.
...if Java is a nightmare, then C would be the Lake of Fire. For all it's failings, Java (and by extension C#) is quite newcomer friendly. Let me know if you ever want any sort of directed help. I probably almost know what I'm talking about :)
Most of my opinion of java was trying to figure out what was wrong with zimbra or some other crazyness from stack traces that went on for miles. If its more like C# then I see how it would be friendlier.
Zimbra! I remember you...yeah, if it was Linux dependencies headaches, I don't blame you.
As for Java the language, it's pretty much syntactically identical to C# 1.x/2.x. Verbose but easy to learn. .NET has added a ton of language and library features since then...and Java seemingly has not. Too many languages, not enough time to keep up :-\ The Win8 stuff looks intriguing...
I'd seriously recommend learning C# over Java any day. Learning .NET is actually useful in real-word situations. Also C# .NET apps can be pretty speedy... not so much for Java.
I'd really only use Java if I absolutely HAD to have portability between Windows, Linux, Mac OS, etc...
Well that's some helpful advice. The only reason I tried Java is because I've heard it is easier to learn than some other things. But perhaps usefulness outweighs ease of learning.
In my opinion, C# is no more difficult to learn than Java. As Courtney said they syntax is pretty similar. Lots of resources too. Easy to make start making useful Windows applications too...
Also I hate the GUI libraries for Java, Swing I'm looking at you...
It's not a bad thing to know Java... I mean they do teach using it at several different colleges around here.
Does anybody else ever feel like are constantly rewriting the same sorts of things over and over again just in a different format or language? I've got great ideas for programming projects but am constantly getting bogged down by having to write the same basic stuff and get burnt out before I make it to any of the interesting parts.
I don't know how many times I've written basic UI stuff like buttons and drop down menus, or write code to read in text or XML files...
It'd be awesome to create reusable libraries so I didn't have to do this... but by the time I get around to reuse the library the technologies have changed and I have to refactor the code anyway...
Alright complaining break over back to your regularly scheduled programming.
@Brad: yes
!!!
Aren't there frameworks and such designed to solve just such a problem?
Surely. That's why every framework is created. It's just a matter of finding them and them actually having what you want. :)
My best (programming) friend has been jQuery for a while. Very worth knowing if you have to do any JavaScript whatsoever. Even with that, though, you end up doing mundane things like hand-coding dialog box controls.
I had a big long reply about frameworks done on my phone, but it refused to let me post it... so this is all you get.
Frameworks can be really useful but not everything is readily available in an open source framework. I don't know how many different versions of 2D tile engines I've written... and basic 2D rectangle collision detection and response. Not a whole lot of good extensible open source frameworks available for this. I mean sure, there are some physics engines but they often take a lot of work to make usable in a given situation.
Certain technologies seem to be really lacking in frameworks also, Actionscript 3 for example his pretty poor free open source framework availability.
Anyway, regardless of frameworks there always seems to be some kinds of code which I feel like I just keep writing over and over again.
So true, so true
October 19th! That date just keeps coming up...
October 19th!
So I had this awesome idea. I was going to make a vacuum chamber tank thing for my vacuum table so I could get some extra suction power. Well...if you have a vacuum tank it can easily be converted to a pressure tank. And who doesn't love a pneumatic potato launcher!? Safer and most likely cheaper than the traditional combustion design!
....
And then, because the world if brimming with retarded people, it came to my attention that making such a device is almost certainly illegal. Stupid people I give you a big thumbs down.
Whats cheaper then PVC and starter fluid? :)
Though, with a good pressure tank you could probably get a much stronger blast...
This reminds me of a wild, fantastical concept I found on Wikipedia the other day: Vactrains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vactrain). I'm particularly fascinated by in part about shooting into space at 20,000+ mph!
This came about from a direct query for maglev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev) after seeing a demonstration and reading about the Meissner effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meissner_Effect).
...now that I explain my train of thought, this seems almost entirely unrelated. But seriously, 20,000 mph burrowing, projectile trains sounds pretty freaking awesome.
Completely unrelated, yes. Freaking awesome, yes as well!
Haha! I had that idea years ago! Just ask Brad, I am sure I rambled about it more then once. Though I am sure someone thought it up in the 60s but had no way of building it.
Airless tubes with a floating train is the way to go!
Edit: Nope, some guy in 1910 thought it up before me :P
"was explored in the 1910s by American engineer Robert Goddard"
Completely unrelated to trains... In light of the roof over the wood pile project, I got one of these as an early birthday present. One of those things you always want but never buy because you aren't exactly sure how useful it will be.

I am incredibly lame this Halloween. I am making a new Halloween resolution that I will finish at least two cool projects by this time next year! No more lameness!
No more lameness! Sounds like a good resolution. One that many people could benefit from. Myself included.
The forums...it really is the dead!
Dead, yes. But you're on the internet now! Torch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZPGYekUYYc&sns=em)!
Awesome! I have been doing some more experimenting with the torch making and have interesting results.
It would seem that, despite what would seem logical, kerosene burns nice and bright but for a very short period of time making it a poor torch. Motor oil on the other hand, when soaked into a cotton shirt and wrapped on a metal pole will burn for probably 15 to 30 minutes! Not to mention it is a nightmare to put out. I was swinging that thing around like a lightsaber and all it did was make super awesome whooshing noises.
But there is a problem...a very tightly wrapped piece of cloth may seem logical, but all it does is burn the outside couple layers and leave a large portion of the inner material completely undamaged. My solution to this was to roll/fold the cloth into a sort of rope and wrap it around. For that matter, a cotton or similar non melty type rope may be a fantastic torch end material.
Ideas?
Interesting findings. That kerosene burns quickly is surprising...but then again, it's usually wicked up something and then burnt. Same with lamp oil.
We could try to devise something similar, but that quickly becomes more lantern like and less torch like.
Too bad about tightly wound cloth not burning well. Predictable, but a bummer. I wonder suspect creating some sort of air channel down the center would help (drilled holes, simple spacer, etc). But that's getting overly complex again...I think we just need tar.
And we should video some more :) Let's create a new thread on this, under Rec.
Edit: new topic, Simple Torches (http://randomland.net/forum/index.php/topic,227.msg4607.html?PHPSESSID=tjjqclo6uhj2bngcnd0jgpcur1#msg4607). Let's plot!
In a flash of something like inspiration, I have decided that building a cool killer robot suit with a working gun arm that shoots nerf pellets then creating a movie where this robot goes on a killing rampage. The robot is finally defeated when one of the heroes distracts it by yelling logical paradoxes at it such as "Do not obey this command!", "This statement is false", "Is the set of all sets a subset of itself?" This temporarily paralyzes the robot allowing another prson to sneak up and switch the robot off using the handy access panel located on the robots chest or back of course. All of this would be really cheesey and stupid of course as I have no filmaking, directing or acting talent. It would be really fun to make though.
The robot suit would need to be cool looking though not like a box wrapped in tin foil and shoved on somebodies head. I am thinking of borrowing some of the desing of the old optimus prime as I have seen somebody construct a good looking version of that.
Some robot coolness features:
Working nerf blasting arm (must be manually reloaded though)
Light up eyes (real human eyeholes located elsewhere)
Opening control panel with dials switches and lights.
Light up indicators on chest
Robot voice changer in helmet/head
This needs to be able to move well unlike the lego bodies. With what I learned from that experiance, as well as the boba fett helmet and other project I think I could pull this off.
It would make a sweet halloween costume too, if I start now maybe it'll ready halloween 2014.
Haha! I like the idea! And I would be happy to offer any help that you will take. I have a big sheet of semi-rigid plastic and loads of rather bright LEDs in various colors. I can even offer my services to program one of the IC chips I have to make them flash in whatever pattern you like! (or get some 555 timers from the R-Shack)
Lets make the project its own thread!
Alright, I will go ahead and make a thread for this. And I would be happy for any help I can get.
I think for this project to be successful it is going to have to be completely designed before it is built. All the joints figured out, all the required materials identified and working parts figured out.
Still thinking about materials, need it to be strong but not too heavy but also pretty darn cheap. May need to use a variety of materials for the different pieces depending on how sturdy/light the piece needs to be.
Not that anyone would ever want to put this much effort into such an absurd task, but I always have my vacuum forming table!
I think you are wrong about that... look at the people who do things like build a complete copy of ferrari out of carrdboard in their garage.
There are plenty of people who will put insane effort into absurd tasks. The question is.. are any of us one of those people?
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone I know! And I suppose to people I don't as well.
Happy thanksgiving! You're sitting right next to me. Except for when you're not.
Gobble-obble-obble!! Happy turkey daytime to all!
Forums is the reads again. Randomland needs some love!
They are dead...
But you know what would be awesome? Anna came up with this awesome idea of an interactive paint desktop background. So like you could just paint random things as your background or something. Leave random notes or draw huge faces to scare whoever walked into the room...that would just be awesome.
Since the forums is so dead I'll post something.
For all of you that aren't closely watching me on Facebook, (and we all know nobody is) I drew this last night and figured I would share it.
This is my drawing of Admiral Adama from Battlestar Galactica...for all you that have actually seen it.

I don't recognize the face, but it looks classifiable as regnum animale and is therefore well beyond my skill level. Good job. Also, my app didn't notify me of this post :-\ were there any other new posts on here recently?
Not to my knowledge, no. And thank you.

Merry Christmas!
Merry christmas to all! And to all a good day.
Christmas is over, but I have successfully done green screening! I think it is pretty awesome.
Mans! The forums are back alive!
I am going home early today. It seems the world is flooding around me and the roof is leaking. Lets see if there is an open path to my house.
Yeah, it's been quite the week...
So last night I accidentally discovered that my son's typing toy has a swear word filter in it. This toy is about. The size of an old pda with a full keyboard and other buttons. It plays a buch of silly games as well as letting you write messages to your "pal". The messages you write don't go anywhere and aren't stored. If you write something that is filtered it beeps at you and erases it.
I spent like 20 minutes trying to determine the depth and breadth of the filtering. It hass all of the standard four letter words and their various varieties. It has all of the crude names for body parts including "butt". It also has all of the technical names for all reproductive organs including "ovaries". It matches hold words only. So you can write things like "cockroach".
It has a massive amount of words, counting all the different mutations of swear words and bodyparts. Just adding "face" at the end of everything adds a whole bunch ("buttface",s#!tface, etc...)
My real question is why??? What is the point of such extensive filtering? You can't send or store messages. What are they trying to prevent?
How odd. Trying to instill at a young age that those words are not ok to type?
That is odd indeed. But it's pretty much moot. If I know one thing about kids, it's that they can combine otherwise-innocent words in surprisingly biting (and hilarious) phrases!
Lol, the only reason I can think of is. Does his toy read out the sentences or "words" to him? Cuz if it reads out the words...yeah eventually you will figure out what you say your son will just mimmick. Lol.
Or...maybe they are afraid if they let the device respond it might start to sound nasty and lead to other problems! Lol. Hahaha.

I just had a dream where I was eating a bag of sea salt and vinegar potato chips out of pantry. Even though they were stale, and the bag said they expired in 2007, I just kept eating them. I knew we had another fresh bag in the kitchen. Melissa tried to convince me to eat those instead, but no matter how hard I tried I just kept coming backing to the stale bag of chips.
When I woke up I could actually taste stale chips in my mouth. I checked and no, the bag of chips in the pantry is NOT from 2007. I'm sure this means I need therapy or something.
Haha. How odd. I wonder what that could mean? Is there something stale from around 2007 in your life? Or maybe it's just your subconscious telling you to eat more questionable food to boost the immune system :) All I have been dreaming about recently are people getting diabetes and losing hands sky-walker style.
Snow!
Me too! Unfortunately not enough to keep me from driving in to work, though.
Dead.

Apparently somebody pulled off that robbery that we used to joke about.

You beat me! I was 4 seconds from posting just that! Except not the mobile version.
But yeah, that is crazy, and funny, in a sad way. I always figured the police presence in that area was lacking. Sounds like it was extremely easy for him too, seeing as there was only one person working and no customers at the time(there was 4" of snow outside, so that seems reasonable) I also never saw how a town that small could support a bank.
Crazy, sad and scary. I would rather little areas like that be free from crime of all types (well, all areas actually)
What is this? The article no longer exists. I am quite curious what this robbery we always joked about is!
Must be the bank in Mill City. I know, the article was down by the time I tried to look :(

I don't know why they would take an article down so quickly. Seems bad practice to break links so fast. Now anyone you shared that will just have confused readers.
Here are a bunch on links to articles on the topic.

Can ANYONE tell me what this guy is from? I ran across this picture I took today and I can not for the life of me remember what movie it is from...
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh581/Jacsveus01/Stuff291.jpg
Man. So dead.
Yup. Dead. What might liven it up?
Someone figuring out what that guy in the link I posted is from. Or maybe some backyard firepit action. I've been craving hamburgers!
The best guess I can muster (for that picture)is the Dune miniseries. Which is almost certainly wrong, but it has the same look and feel.
The best I can mustard (for hamburgers) is Grey Poupon.
You are indeed correct. For everyone who reads this and is equally curious as to where the man in the absurd hat is from...he is from the Dune miniseries. It was my initial thought, but I had been unable to find any evidence. Well at least now I know!
I'm not sure if I should be pleased or if I should be disappointed with myself for getting that right...
That is something to be proud of!
So dead in here...
So totaly dead.
Camp camp?
Nope. Well, yes, but not for a while. I've got a little somethin'-somethin' I'm waiting on.
What about a day trip hike? Anybody up for that?
Totally! When and where? How long to be gone for? Hike in eat lunch/luner and hike out?
Edited to remove my dumb.
This sounds fun to me! I will provide myself.
Yourself is always welcome to provide it!
Today at work I brought in an old computer with Windows 98 on it. I hid it behind my coworkers desk and plugged his mouse, keyboard, and monitor into it. His actual computer sits on his desk, I left all the normal cords plugged into it so unless you go behind the desk you won't realize it isn't the computer you are actually connected to. Then I left a note on his desk stating that the IT helpdesk would be by to do some software upgrades that should be completed by the time he gets back. He has been on vacation in Hawaii, and gets back on Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction to his "upgraded" workstation.
I originally planned to use a PC with Windows 95 but I could find anything with a 300mhz or less CPU.
Lol, ok, that's actually pretty funny. Let us know how it goes!
I just went for a 1.5 mile run down the road. I am quite certain I ran into a skunk.
Literally ran into a skunk?
That sure would help one be certain of it.
Well, more literally, I ran away from a skunk! It might have been our cat, but I really didn't want to risk it.
F$%# you US government. Thanks to your stupid/potentially illegal lawsuit against MegaUpload all of the other file sharers have shut down or restricted access from the US. Now I can't find a stock ROM for my Acer Iconia tablet ANYWHERE. Every link is broken. This is a completely legal file which am no longer able to get access to. I've found a few rooted files but as I can't boot up the tablet I'm not able to root it. Thanks to you basically being an enforcement arm for the RIAA/MPAA jerks you've just made the internet that much of worse place for normal people without having done any damage whatsoever to the pirates.
Yes I am really annoyed/frustrated right now. Sorry for the rant.
Wow, that sucks. Would using a proxy or something help?
Also, I agree. Copyright should only be a civil matter between the infringer and the owner. You don't see the patent office hunting down violators do you? No, you don't. Disputes are settled in court without the involvement of the FBI or swat teams.
I'm going to try and send it back to Acer to fix. I called yestereday but apparently their ticket system was broken so they asked me to call back later.
The MegaUpload lawsuit was especially henious as the only thing connecting the website was the .com domain which was registered with a US company. The site was not hosted in the US. Apparently the US is the worldwide ineternet copyright police.
You might try an android device forum. From what I have read in the past they make rom backups before flashing custom ones, so someone might have a copy of your stock rom to share. I surprised Acer can't get you one.
Forums, why are you so dead?
So few posts :(
How is the baby?
Baby is good. And pretty cute, as far as babies go. :) She's all over the internets!
Mans. So the deads in here. Or something like that.
Nazis!... At the Center of the Earth?
I saw a horrible looking movie at a RedBox yesterday and I am tempted to watch it out of some strange curiosity. I feel a need to see how bad it could possibly be, or how awesome.
Zombies, Nazis and a steam-punk Hitler. Need I say more?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2130142/
Read the reviews for more fun. People are either crazy about it or repulsed by it.
Oh my goodness. I read the IMDB plot summary and am....at a loss for words. I do have a soft spot for that steampunk Nazi setting, though. (Perhaps the primary reason I like that Captain America movie??)
We should have a viewing-party when you are back within a few hundred miles (or few thousand) and see just how atrocious it is.
Also, [blink]Blink![/blink] [dot]Dotted underline[/dot] and [spoiler]Dont look![/spoiler]
Wow, when I look at these "spoiler" posts on a real computer (instead of a forum app on a phone), it actually hides the spoiler! This all makes a lot more sense now. :P
I appear to have lost a great deal of my pictures, somehow. There are no gaps in the folder dates, but certain pictures simply don't exist. For example...all the pictures from our Tenting on the Ten Ten are gone. Does anyone have any backups of my pictures?
Yowzers. That sucks. I'll take a look. I grabbed a bunch of Zourts a while back and some of yours might have been in there too.
How big a drive would we need to store a backup of everyone's collection? I'll take a survey of mine when I get home. It would be coon (if impractically slow) to have a online backup for anyone who wants to use it. Randomland has 500gb at the moment, though should be enough for two or three people :)
Right now I think you have unlimited photo storage if you upload them all via google+. Or maybe that's only with their mobile app...
Well my picture folder is currently sitting at right about 37 gigs. I don't have Court's pics from the last two years actually, but his folder is about 64 gigs for me. Granted I am sure it has increased in size greatly in the last two years. And actually I have none of your pictures, Nick.
I looked at the prices of external hard drives on Newegg and you can get 500GB for $90 or 1-2TB for $120 ish. Hard to say. I can't imagine we would need more than 500GB for quite some time.
Now is not the time to be harddrive pricing. The prices have recovered some from the hurricanes, but not completely. You should be able to get a 2tb for $100 when things even back out.
On a completely unrelated note, we should do this. Why? Simply because it is possible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHJOz_y9rZE
That is pretty cool
Haha. I like it. They need to get an adurino or something hooked to a computer to translate MP3s into signals for the floppy drives.
I actually found a tutorial video, and that is exactly what they did. The floppy drives are hooked up to an adurino, and using some software it will play any midi file you want. Granted certain midi files will work better than others. I don't know how it would work with mp3s though...since the adurino assigns certain midi channels to certain drives and that wouldn't work with an mp3. But I don't really know about this stuff.
I suppose the MIDI notes and just frequencies to be played, MP3 have multiple frequencies all being played at the same time. Probably won't work well with the limited fidelity of the floppy drive :) It might be fun to try and turn it into a strange speaker though. I have a cheap adurino (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arduino-Compatible-nano-mini-Mega-328-for-Arduino-IDE-free-USB-Cable-00984-/110896151860?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d1ecfd34#ht_860wt_1295) that I got recently and a floppy drive. Wonder if they posted their source...
You will probably get more out of this than me... He did talk about lots of software stuff I didn't get.

That is the tutorial. Sadly, I must admit that I am playing with floppy drives at the moment. Mostly got it working. Just don't have the board.

Eat that, Darth Vader! I'm seeing rainbows in my eyes
(edit: this one (http://youtu.be/u-eOLBABl1E) is fun to watch because you can see the moving parts well)
Haha oh no Nyan Cat... And for moving parts I personally like this one.

And not that anyone probably particularly cares, but I did get my 'hotwired' floppy working finally. All my frustration yesterday apparently stemmed from the fact that the floppy drive I was using was actually broken. Ah, well that's how it goes I suppose. Now all I need is one of those adurino boards. I guess they are pretty cheap.
You can get a full sized one for about the same price that I got mine for. If you order from Chinese sellers they are even cheaper but it takes an extra week for shipping. Not too bad all in all.
I am toying with the idea of getting one of the ones that will interface with interface with an android phone.
Knock knock. Anyone in here?
Dead. Don't let it die!
Who's there?
It's not dead just hibernating :)
Nope, not dead.
Oh good.
How are things going for ya down in gatorvill?
Sadly gatorless. But that's only because I haven't been seeking the out. (and they're probably more prevalent farther south). But things are going well.
Need more camp, though.
Since I keep forgetting to respond to your email, I went camping with Kolby at Elk Lake. Met some awesome people that fed us lunch and let us play on their super cool rope bridge they built. Also hiked to the top of Battle Ax. Never been up there before. We actually ran across a two college students (or former students) up there. They were pretty cool people too. Also found that geocache under a big stump on the trail around the lake. We signed the book!
Here are some pictures if anyone cares.

Sounds like a good time! Glad you found cool people up there. Even better the awesome bridge!
That bridge is the awesomenuts!
I think you ought to make a longish "heyman I went camping" post on Randomland-proper with tons of pictures. Because we need more content.
And chime in here (http://randomland.net/forum/index.php/topic,4.msg5054.html#msg5054), por favor?
Brad, you ever get your tablet fixed?
Yep it is fixed. Even upgraded to ice cream sandwich rather than honeycomb. I use that thing pretty much everyday.
What model is it? Does it rules well? Not noticibly slow ever?
It is an Acer Iconia tab. Yeah I haven't had any slowdown issues. I had a certain application lock up and require a restart but that was the apps fault. I mostly use it for web browsing, book reading and playing emulated games. It never gets a real workout.
I am typing this message on my tablet now.
Do you use the web browser for these here forums, or do you use a forum app (Tapatalk, etc)?
I just use the regular browser because I am too cheap to buy any android apps like tapatalk.
Knock knock
Nobody is home. Go away.
Hey! Yo! I'm still here.
How's the fall falling in your parts? Today it was cooler outside than inside, here. Both in the morning AND the evening!...but not much of the time in between. A few leaves have given up clinging to their branches, but many others simply don't see the point. (I'm trying to figure what the climatic catalyst is down here...lower humidity?...weather less than 80 deg??)
Yeppers. We should all post some pictures!
I just got back from the beach and can share a few or the those pictures. It was rather rainy there but fun still.
In the last week or two the trees around here have really started to show the season. Pinks and reds are starting to mix in with the greens. Piles of crunchy, discarded leaves. Nuts falling everywhere. The chestnut carnage alone is startling. And brisk, brisk mornings.
Indeed. In the last few days our trees have decided they want to start dropping all their leaves. At least one of our trees is already almost bare. I have actually found that the afternoons seem rather warm the last couple of days though.
I was downloading Service Pack 3 for a computer I am setting up at work and realized it was downloading the file just about as fast as I could toss 1.44MB floppy disks. Just something to think about.
Man, that certainly is something to think about! I mean, what is "tossing floppy disks"? Metaphorical? Hyperbolic? ...Allegorical? Similical? ...uh, superbowl?
Downloading SP3 is unquestionably an exercise in a finite data transfer from one digital source to another. By contrast, "tossing a floppy" has no implied start point or end point and no meaningful transfer of data occurs. Thus, this term seems elaborate on details oft-overlooked details of the data-transfer story, albeit in a rather jovial manner. One is left to assume that this incongruence was intentional, meant to engage the mind by finding deeper meaning by attempting by map largely-conceptual ideas to a very physical, human-to-plastic interaction.
So I pondered it. For seconds even. Quickly I determined that a literal interpretation is by far the most humorous. Literature profs be d'rned. So I hastily pursued this route. And lo! several mental images sprung forth.
The best? Nick holding two palms full of 1.44mB floppies over that old, big opening at work upstairs, and "Hadookin'ing" them to the foyer below. Best data transfer ever.
Personally I just assumed it was a figure of speech. That was all the thought I put into it, really.
Personally I just envisioned pulling the disks one at a time off a stack, each disk contains 1.44 MB of SP3, and tossing them through my office door. I think I like Zourt's better.
Word. As they say. (no one I know says that, for the record)
Do you still have Windows 95 on floppy disks sitting around? That was quite the prize.
Even if you did have Windows 95 floppies laying around would they even work anymore? I think those things only have like a 10-15 year shelf life.
No, I don't think I do. I only have so much room to store useless relics. And like Brad said, they would be extra useless as they would be corrupt (and not any kind of cool corrupt, like evil windows or anything) I think they got sold at a garage sale a few years ago.
Anyone have Halloween-ish plans yet?
No plans, but I usually pretty boring. I do want some pumpkinry, though. All the good pumpkin patches seem to be are 100 - 3000 miles away.
Pumpkins? Florida? I don't think those two belong in the same sentence. They aren't exactly a tropical climate sort of plant, I don't think. It would be fun to go to a pumpkin field though. Who knows the last time I carved one.
We will be carving some on Sunday if you are interested in joining in!
Well, this part of Florida is really like south south Alabama. Both in climate and in culture (for better or worse). This ain't Miami, y'all. That's not to say that today wasn't 80-something degrees by midday, but yeah.
I've heard rumors of patches of pumpkins a bit north. Or we could drive 4 miles and check out the parking lot with rows of pumpkins and sporadically laid hay.
Finally had to turn the heat on at home. It'll be interesting to see how people around here take the "cold"!
Mans!
Happy Halloween! I really wanted to go do that pumpkin carving thing...but Sunday kind of came and went and I didn't hardly even realize it. Now it is November...almost. November means that I will soon be reaching twenty five years of age. Two and a half decades. Exactly 25% of a century. Or 1/40 of a millennium for those that care!
Got any age-upping party plans?
I put a baby in a pumpkin.
Nope, no birthday plans. I don't even know what I would want to do if I were to make plans. And as for the baby in a pumpkin...that was pretty awesome!
You should do something awesome. Like an all-night Suri revival, or something. Bring your own welder and angle grinders. :)
There was a skunk in the house tonight. Now our stairs are stanky. I think the dog chased it down as she was at the top eating the cat food she wasn't supposed to be eating. If she was on the porch eating her own food it never would have got in. Sigh.
Oh man. That sucks. :( I remember when our dog got sprayed by a skunk...we closed off the room for about a week.
It wasn't nearly that bad. I cant smell it anymore, but the family that just returned from visiting my sister in Washington assure me it is still detectable. They should be used to it soon :)
Skunk in the house? Wow that stinks.
I remember being trapped in your house for 30 minutes one night waiting for the skunk to get off your front porch so I could go out to my car. One of the hazards living out in the "country" I guess. Sounds like it could have been worse though.
Yeah. Lots worse. If the dog actually had gotten sprayed rather then the skunk just squirting a little I would have had to scrub things a lot longer :/ But all is well that ends well.
Looks like it's time to break out zourtney's won/lost stickers.
Happy thanksgiving to all the randomlanders!
Happy Thanksgiving! A little late perhaps.
I too hope that you all had a good thanksgiving!
After a few power outages, we are back online.
I wondered... Did you guys get any of the white stuff from the sky?
Yep, had a pretty good dusting this morning in Stayton. Not much of anything in Salem though.
It was coming down pretty good last night. I went out about midnight or so and ran around in it. Not much on the ground when I got up this morning though.
Just wind and some slushy rain around here.
Man, I miss the snow. I could use a snow camping/hiking adventure..!
Come on up, I'll drive you to some snow :-)
I've been wanting to see some snow and go for a hike. Or a hike in the snow. It seems like a good excuse to take some pictures.
I'd love to :) probably won't happen until May or so, though. But! When I do come, I should be staying long enough to at least squeeze in a little woodsy something
We should do some snow hiking or camping! I'm up for it!
At this point though it'll have to be after Christmas... so probably sometime January. Let me know when you guys are available and we can at least do a day trip or something.
Sounds good to me! I have been put on reduced hours until the end of January, so I have lots of free time for whatever.
Mans! The forums is teh dead...and I hate being sick. Hoping everyone is having a good Christmas season so far.
Sick?! Why are you sick? (I tired that last week and decided against it...)Merry Christmas to all the Randomlanders! (and everyone else, of course)
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Happy new year everyone. Become awesome in 2013 - whatever it takes!
Happy new year! The awesome prompts, and I shall try.
So deads in the here.
Tell me about it.
Well, ok, I will. From time to time, there are people that post on here. (hint: mostly you and me) Sometimes we post lots of stuff. Other times we don't. Now is "other times".How's the grandebuggy? Does it have a name yet?
I protest! You two are not the only ones to post. Sometimes I post lots of things as well.
The buggy is setting in the barn, nice and dry. Currently it is waiting on me to not be sick. I need to pull off the engine still to find the oil leak in the bell housing. I'd like it to be warmer, but free time wanes, so I might do it soon.
Anyone like to help?
I would but Anna is here until the 2nd so I doubt she would want to stand around all day while I attempted to help you with the buggy. Who knows.
Unfortunately I am not a reliable mechanics assistant at this time. Although I should bring Luke over to your place sometime to see all the animals. Probably when it is slightly nicer outside.
Here is a boring story from work:
I had to work late today, the utility e-payment website was down. If any user tried to login they would get an error message stating "The Redirect URI Cannot Contain the Newline Character". Which seems like a web coding or server setup error. We haven't changed anything lately, so there wasn't much I could do besides calling the vendor... The conversation went something like this:
Vendor-man: I just spoke to a coworker and was informed that they are doing the scheduled quarterly software update. We coordinated with Robert White to schedule this.
Me: Uh.... who?
Vendor-man: Robert White.
Me: Who is Robert White?
Vendor-man: ..... Can I call you back in a few minutes?
- Later -
Vendor-man: Apparently there was a mistake with the schedule confirmation. The person contacted about confirming the schedule is not actually with your jurisdiction.
Me: ...
Vendor-man: Actually he isn't even located on the same coast as you.
Me: Can you give me an estimated time when they'll have the server back up and running?
Vendor-man: ...I'll call you back.
Really.... Just wow. How professional of them. Did they get it fixed soon after?
It took another hour and a half but eventually they got it fixed. We are now looking into restricting their access to those servers to pre-authorized times.
This is actually the second vendor we have had to do this to.
I have partaken in the act of dumpster-diving (not to be confused with swamp-diving.)
At Stars Appt I was taking out some trash when I discovered a cache of goods tossed in with the bads. Someone had decided to throw out some twenty + year old dye-cast trucks like some that my Grandpa used to collect (nabbed them for my Grandma) as well as some random computery junk (and a copy of SimCity.) But best of all were two length of climbing rope. Each 60m long and 10.5mm in diameter. These two ropes look to have had very little use and would cost $100+ each (not sure on what qualifications they have yet) I wanted to keep looking to see if there was any other gear in there, but alas, we were late leaving to see a house that Star had an appointment for (That they had already rented and didn't bother calling to tell us.)
Update:
From the writing on the caps of the ends of either rope...
Blue one is a Blue Water Accelerator. (http://www.backcountry.com/blue-water-accelerator-10.5mm-climbing-rope?CMP_SKU=BWR0008&MER=0406&CMP_ID=GAN_GPLA&003=8219600&010=BWR0008-BLU-S50MSTD&mr:trackingCode=3796AEC8-8E50-E011-9324-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=32930638905&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=55454411025&origin=pla&gclid=CLWIpcOC7rQCFYF7QgodnF8A0g)
And the grey one is a New England Maxim EN 892 (http://www.cmcrescue.com/New-England-Maxim-Climbing-Rope-P1036.aspx)
I need to learn what to do with it, but I can now climb something....
I have been wanting climbing rope for as long as I have been doing climbing. That is a nice find...especially for being in a dumpster. You have to wonder why someone would throw it out. I remember being appalled at the prices when I looked ages ago. If ever you happen to want to use them for climbing purposes, I have a fairly nice harness and other related gear you could use if you have none. I am not overly fond of heights these days...
We need to find a cave system to hike to and repel into :-)
Nice find! Now I guess you need to take up mountain climbing!
Who the heck throws out climbing rope? Sheez even if you aren't going climbing anymore rope can always be used for something.
We all have a theory that involves an angry girlfriend/wife. Or, sadly, someone passed on. Or someone moved out and was lazy.
I want one:
http://vimeo.com/57940210#
That is pretty awesome! So...you want the car, the drone, or both? Haha
Also, one of my favorite TSFH songs.

That is pretty awesome! So...you want the car, the drone, or both?
Yes.
Speaking of which, (cars...not drones) I started using one! Though using one of those things might be more fun.
Awesome! Finally got your license?
Haha no not yet but I actually got myself to drive on the road. If I actually keep driving it probably won't be long though.
Do it. :)
Happy Valentine's Day. Do you say that to your friends? I don't really know. Perhaps it is just one of those things about holidays...feeling the need to wish a happy one to everyone else. Either way it seemed like a good excuse to say something on the forums.
Happy VD to you to!
This nice weather makes me want to get out and do something. Hike or bike or whatnot.
So dead in here.
Thank for the card Zourtney. Camp camp.
Cool, it came? Camp camp! I'm going to visit some time this summer, mid July. Let's find some woods!Edit: and hills. Please.
I bought myself a 1TB hard drive on Amazon for $50 It is the WD10EARS. I put it in my old computer so it had one SATA drive instead of two IDE drives. Now I have 4 times more hard drive space and I can actually hook up my DVD drive! So far it is working well...
What are you going to put on it? More space for steam games? :)
Haha probably. Or any other games someone who uses it might want to play. I am almost tempted to get another one for my good computer. I probably don't really need more space though. At least now I have a computer with enough space on it to use as a data backup.
Cool. Want to participate in some image backupage?
I always like images!
So dead. Very dead.
Did Z-man get back to the gator swamp ok? (Be careful if swamp diving)
So, so dead. I concur...and was going to post a few days ago, even. I did indeed make it back to Gatorland. And, unfortunately, I still haven't seen any alligators -- except in a zoo a few hundred miles away...oh, and as meat on a stick. Hopefully soon I can start exploring the more dangerous areas ;)
I hear there are some snails invading your lands. Giant sails. (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/13/130417-giant-african-land-snail-florida-invasive-science-animals/)
The forum seems unnaturally dead as of late. Also, that was actually kind of an interesting article about the snails.
It was, indeed. In fact, the only reason I haven't responded is because I wanted to Photoshop a picture of myself with this giant snail in the background.
(http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4929240437687783&pid=1.7) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061584/)
That'll have to do ;)
Awesome!
I drove some 10 ft T-posts into the ground (obviously not ALL the way in) and made some oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies today! It would seem I also screwed up my shoulder again.
Mans...the forums is the dead.
What ate the t-posts for? Trying to stop the influx of grazing animals?
Indeed I am. They went through the old fence the other day and ate all our baby broccoli plants.
We got a free roll of 8 foot deer fence. I think today I am going to put in the angle braces for the corners and weld them. Thought about asking for some help, but I assume everyone is busy and it isn't really that difficult. Hopefully it all goes well and I don't set the field on fire or something!
I recently welded two pairs of similar post (only 6 feet tall) end to end to make a 12ft post. Going to use it as a trellis for my hop growing (they really like to climb, apparently.
If you need any help holding things in place for welding or anything like that, give me a call!
I want to need some welding done. Does that count for anything?
We need to stop being so dead! Also, make sure to scroll down and check out the stuff below the fold.
I need to know how to make pancakes in various different shapes by tomorrow, er... this morning. Guess I'll fall back on the tried and true method of random experimentation.
Dead. So dead.
Rain, rain, go away. Let the forum live another day.
Well, to put some life in the forums I have a story! I have been welding in the rain the last two days. Genius I know. Just trying to get the fence around the garden done. My corner braces weren't good enough and when we put tension on the fence the post started to pull out of the ground. So I have been working on reinforcing it. Hopefully it works.
Also, the fuel pump on my truck seems to have died. If anyone knows more about these things and wants to give me a hand...that would be great. Not sure what to do, really.
Do you have a book for it? If it's not in the tank then it's easy. If it's in the tank then it can be a headache. Probably will gave to lift the bed off to get to it :-\ Might not be too bad.
My first thought was that it was in the tank, but Francine's wasn't, so...
I took a quick gander under her ol' bonnet but didn't find it. Could be I don't know exactly what it looks like...but nothing screamed "FUEL PUMP!!" so I gave up. The internet seems to imply that year had them both in the tank OR under the hood. If I need to take the bed off...I will definitely need your help, Nick. Or you, Court, since I suppose you will be here before terribly long!
That would be fun, in a way. I haven't had an auto-project in far, far, far too long. But you'll probably get to it before I am there :( in other news: camp camp in July??
Camp camp!!!!!
!!
I should have the blazer up to snuff by then. It's even dry inside now. Much to the dismay of the plants growing in the carpet.
In regards to the 'yota; I would gladly help! I can come by next week sometime and see if we can find a pump on it someplace if you like.
If you've got the free time to come and at least see if we can find it, that would be good. I'm kind of worried I will have to take the bed off though. I suppose that would be a good excuse to paint it!
Taking the bed off that sounds like a future with rusted, busted bolts. But you might get luck.
Is the truck going to be painted camo when I visit next? :)
Haha I sure hope not. I am rather fond of the red.
Haha, yeah. We don't need another Francine on our hands :P ...In other news, I saw a turtle crossing the road while riding my bike yesterday.
Awesome. I recently acquired another turtle. It was found in the yard of a friend of my Grandma's. We think it's a Russia tortoise.
Doing much riding?
Only a little. We really recently got one of those bike-mountable baby seats. It's a little awkward, but pretty good overall. Pretty soon it's going to be too hot to even try to ride :/
Those bikes seats are cool. Luke and I use ours all the time.
Sorry about the weather... it is just starting to get nice here.
We should ride again.
Quote from: Nick on Jun 01, 2013, 04:06 PM
We should ride again.
So quotable. If we ever made short videos, that's how we should end them all :)
The news is making me think I need to start encrypting all my communications, just on principal.
Anyone interested in having an encrypted chat relay available on the server?
Maybe so. What did you have mind?A Jabber server, or something more sophisticated?
Yeah, just a jabberer of some sort. Either ejabber or jabber2 or one of the others (there are lots) ejabber seems the most mature. Most all of them support ssl and some other encryption.
Finding a phone client to work with them should be easy. Too bad Google talk doesn't support accounts on other servers.
Edit: might be possible to have a private server talk to Googles server for relaying. And it might also be possible to add other xmpp contacts to Googles chatter.
Haven't heard anything from our Floridian Ranfomland outpost lately. How is everything going?
Nimma nimma nimma do ba! [shampoo in my head!] It's so hot I'm gonna have a heat stroke-a!.... Um, I mean, it is getting hot, humid, and thunderous, which seems to mean summer around here. Other than that, not too much. Still programming stuff, using computers when I should be sleeping, and dreaming of camping :)
dead++
Live!
That was easy. What has everyone been up to? I went bowling tonight....I suck!
I went backpacking. It was fun and now I'm sore. Pics soon :-)
Did I ever post any pics?
My internet has been dead! The server has been dead! Randomland is now un-dead!
Yeah, I broke it then my internet broke. Hello from WAMP world. Long story...
OK... hypothetically non-hypothetical question:
What would you call somebody like Indiana Jone's job title (not talking about the college professor part)? What I mean is, what do you call somebody how goes into dangerous situations (ruins filled with traps, ancient sewers under libraries, nazi germany) to recover valuable artifacts or whatever?
Artifact Recoverer?
Burglar?
Asset Retreiver?
Guy that goes and gets things?
What do you think?
Archeologist? General Adventurer? Tomb robber?
It's dead in here and cold outside.
It's still dead. But at least it's not freezing outside.
So dead. Then alive again. Then severally dead. Now resurrected from a week ago. But it is still dead in here.
this was the most dead I've seen it in a long time
Alive and well and back from the road-trip. Pictures and driving videos soon! It takes forever to process 25 gigs of pictures.
Man! This forum is the deadest it's ever been
